"Old Thread Bump Notification"... vBulletin magic?
Saw this on another forum I frequent... this notification at the bottom of the page at the "quick reply" box and a a pop-up or similar notification when when clicking on the "NEW REPLY" might be worth discussing at higher levels. Set the threshhold at 90days...?

this is awesome!
in before this thread dies for 90 days and gets bumped
edited to add observation...
you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
when you're new, you're asked to search.
when you bump an old thread, you get ridiculed.
so which is it? bump an old thread after searching and get ridiculed?
or make a new thread and get ridiculed for not searching?

I think it is going to depend on the topic: if you ask a question and indicate your multi-faceted search to no avail or need for expansion in a new thread, it's likely better than to bump something 3 years old as your only effort; or at least having it appear to be as such. Is it possible that the old thread is required to put everything in context, sure; but it is more likely that threads that old are lacking in some aspect with current iteration/evolution/etc. The real problem I have with necroposting is in a WTB/WTS section of ANY site!

There's nothing wrong with bumping an old thread for a purpose... bumped like this:
"Bringing this one back, noticed in the last few posts that there was a question about blah blah that the OP couldn't resolve and I'm having the same problem... is there a blah blah..."
In any case, noobs who bump something 10months old to say "hahaha, that was funny, lolzzz" are the intended audience for the notification.
It's a thought.
