ADD ME!
There will be a 10-15 min wait for you to be added to the map until I rewrite the data storage script.

If any data needs to be changed or removed PM me. I will get around to requests as soon as possible.

I was just thinking it might be a good idea for any active members to put up their locations on a map. It might help when someone is in a pinch and needs a fellow members help. Might even help with members that don't know about each other. I have seen some extensions to vbulletin boards that will automatically take the user locations of everyone and map them out.

Just an idea :hustler:

neogenesis2004 08-13-2009 09:12 PM

Could do that with google maps easily. Would just need a list of everyone's locations. Just get Rick to give you an output of the location field from the forum database. (probably not going to happen)

DXO 08-13-2009 09:44 PM

How about an optional listing? I might could make a full google maps page and a mobile site for phones. I know I travel a lot and need help every now and then. It might be a good resource for those who travel and end up needing a little help.

magnamx-5 08-14-2009 12:43 AM

i would be down to help peoples

DXO 08-14-2009 02:51 AM

Well if anyone else sees this as being helpful, I wouldn't mind keeping up with a database of addresses and contact numbers on a site that isn't indexed my Google and such for the people who would like to remain relatively private. I need a little project to work on while I'm not doing other things. I've been looking for a reason to play with some of Google's APIs anyway....

That would be great...then I can have even more people call me to ask how to tune MS and what swap parts work, when I'm playin hos, doin my caviar and cris thang. Seriously...no.

I have a mental map of all of you motherfuckers. The closer to home it is the more detailed it is, too.

...I'm from around your parts, when I'm not in NY.. or deployed for that matter.

sixshooter 08-31-2009 09:33 AM

I like the idea for helping to invite people who are on the forum only occasionally to events like dyno days and racing events. Some of the guys local to me seem decent but only post on the forum once a month or less. That makes it difficult for me to even remember their screen names until I see them again. Not all of us hang together regularly like some of the Texas, NorCal, and NoVa guys do, but it might help. Nearest city location is fine. We don't want too much detail, especially after a certain parts selling member "allegedly" killed a girl and went to jail.

I'd also like filling out the location field to be mandatory when signing up, but that's just a wish.

One other thing I've wished for in the past is a master listing of screen names. All that I see is who is currently logged on and who has logged on that day. That makes it harder to PM somebody who hasn't been on that day. I saw two screen names I thought I recognized in a Central Florida Road Course forum, but couldn't easily double check that or PM them through this forum. I searched but I think it was a variational difference in the name like a number added or something. Locations and a master names listing could have helped.

rrjwilson 09-02-2009 08:31 PM

On my local 5 forum we have a google maps file that gets updated as people add locations to the thread. Just co-ordinates of the house from Google maps and the colour of their 5.
First run is a bitch but updating is quick copy and paste.

DXO 09-02-2009 09:52 PM

Ive thought about this. Maybe start a topic and people can tell if they want to be listed or not. If they do they can provide how specific they want their address to be.

FRT_Fun 09-02-2009 10:11 PM

Yea I don't see a problem with this.. if people want to be added they can be added, if they are afraid someone is gonna rape them in their sleep and steal their car they don't have to add themselves.

I'd be down to see who is in my area so I don't have to search forever to try and find someone.

/edit.. for non raping purposes of course.

Well... for people that are afraid of frt's wrath they can just put a general location (town, city, county, etc.).

NA6C-Guy 09-02-2009 10:32 PM

I'll give my address, I ain't scurd. Bitches

Stein 09-02-2009 10:43 PM

I'll post mine up. I'm not worried that someone is going to drive 1000 miles to the middle of nowhere to my place.

DXO 09-02-2009 11:23 PM

Well I am turning over to the all knowing Google and putting together a spreadsheet in there to be mapped to a Google Maps page. Shouldn't take to long.

curly 09-02-2009 11:40 PM

Could be cool, although useless for me. JayL, Wayne Curr, and Sbcooker around Seattle, cueball1 and I in the Portland area. Everyone else too far to help. Done.

Not everyone knows who all is around. I for one know there is someone in Charlotte south of me but can't remember their name....

For everyone else, check out these.

Form to be added to the map:

THE MAP!!!

The page is currently on one of my spare sites. Data is stored on Google Docs and can be viewed at anytime here.

PS send me a PM if anything breaks...and stays broken. It's a little sketchy at times, but I will keep an eye on it for a while till it gets its training wheels taken off.

It doesn't seem to like returns. Ill take a look into it though.

Hmmmm, ah well people can figure it out.

DXO 09-03-2009 01:47 AM

To fix any future problems with returns not showing up I went ahead and removed the multi-line input on the add me form.

sixshooter 09-03-2009 07:44 AM

I'm on, I think. I went back to the map after registering and I wasn't there yet. Maybe my browser was angry that I went back. I'll try again later.

yea you are on there.

DXO 09-03-2009 11:14 AM

The map takes about 2 mins to update. I added a note for people to put down more than a zip code for location. It seemed to loose them easily. City/state + zip code makes sure it does get dead on though.

I may make a script to generate the map every 10mins or so to stop with the slow generation times with more users added.

DXO 09-03-2009 11:20 PM

OK, this slow map generation bs is pissing me off. For anyone who knows how to script and/or cares heres my plan. Google Docs will record and store the information in a spreadsheet(I hate data verification). Every 5-10 mins the script will access the spreadsheet and retrieve any newly added information and geocode the address/location given. It will then take make or open the existing KML file (Google maps XML file that contains "placemarks" and coordinates of said placemarks) and record the new data in the file.

Seems simple enough. Now off to read Googles API documentation... :hustler:

dustinb 09-04-2009 03:43 PM

I added myself.

DXO 09-05-2009 06:42 AM

New map is finished. Registration is the same. You will not appear on the map right away. I have it recreating the map every 10 mins to keep user load times down. Plus it's bigger now! :fawk:

Without some sort of control or selectivity, every swinging dick who registers will put their name on the map... and pretty soon, we'll have hundreds of NOOBs with ZERO posts all over the place and 1/2 of them don't own Miatas. If there's no "moderator" for the map, I think it's a terrible idea and will eventually end up being worse than useless for locating people. If it was a VBulletin product, and could be controlled... like say, on achieving 100posts, you automatically get sent a PM with the link to add your name to the map, and once a year you automatically get sent an update reminder that if you don't respond to it, you're removed from the map... but just a free-for-all will end up badly.

I would actually love to do this, but it would take Rick or whoever else trusting me with the website and db for me to incorporate it into the forums. Then the ideas would be endless.
  • Map viewable after 10 posts
  • Map registration after 50-100 posts
  • Annual renewal
  • More user data integration
  • Etc.

I started this because I know how to script and I wanted to make something that could help others here. And once again I would love for this to happen it would just take time

FRT_Fun 09-05-2009 09:08 PM

That would be pretty sweet. I just like visual stuff.

lordrigamus 09-05-2009 11:12 PM

That's weird, when I google hustler's address my computer locks up and says " ACCESS DENIED-THIS TERMINAL IS NOW BEING MONITORED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT" and a little black helicopter appears above my building.

It's a long shot, but who knows. I just noticed the topic is not sticky so I guess someone likes it. The script has a little bit more of a delay than I expected but It still seems to be going along with no problems. Next I will be writing a sql db for it instead of using Google Docs to store the data. Yay for fun data validation. Once I do this I will be able to have the KML files generated on page load without any wait, so my 10-12 min delay for users to get added will be gone.

The first may not have been displayed because you only included a zip code in your location. Now you are on the map twice, so I am removing the first entry with less information.

Sorry for anyone who added themselves to the map and were not showing up. Apparently my host decided to clear my crontab sometime last month.:vash:
Everything should be fully updated now.

Well it seems its a bad idea to apply a quick fix to a script I didn't really comment anything in so I don't even remember how it works to well. Ill be fixing it later today for everyone who has added themselves in the past 48 hours.
