RE: OMG read this fast! - I can't view the Announcement!

kotomile, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

It seems, from the title, like it's something I should read, and fast, yet I cannot read it, OMG.

Fergus 08-29-2008 12:54 AM

For the Admins only ?

sigh, no, I can read /\ that, what I can't read is the announcement Rick posted. If I'm not supposed to see it, that's fine, but it's an announcement so it would seem it's something I'm supposed to know.

Braineack 08-29-2008 09:18 AM

yeah something is wrong with the permissions in the announcement feature....ill see if we can fix it.

Braineack 08-29-2008 09:20 AM

Fwiw

recently, the moderators of this board have had a long discussion about the direction we've been going in lately. We want this place to remain the open, fun, and free place that it has always been. However, due to the increasing amounts of hazing and bs posts, we are not only starting to lose noobs, but also some of the older/respected members who are great resources of information.

Furthermore, too much bs starts cluttering the place up so good info/help is getting harder to find. So while, we still plan on keeping the moderating as light as possible, we will be a little less tolerant of the hazing/bs outside of the bs/intro sections. Before the accusations of turning this place into m.net start flying, remember what brought you onto this board in the first place: It's a great resource of information and people for turboing your miata. So lets have more info/help and less hazing/bs.

Go to the main page and then click on the announcement. I got the same messages when I tried to get there from a search for new posts page.

Since it can't be seen, this is the message:

The gist of it is there has been a sort of a shift from occasional and playful roughness to downright crassness, vulgarity, and disrespect. This can not continue.

It is not possible to reply directly to an announcement, so feel free to direct any comments to the announcement here.

kotomile 08-29-2008 09:26 AM

Ah, ok, thanks to both of you.

BTW - I don't mind that the title of the thread was changed, but you spelled announcement wrong. :)

edit - I have a feeling this (announcement) has a lot to do with Hustler, is he still banned? Shame, if so, I was really looking forward to the day he posted pics and data from his build (however far off that day is).

Braineack 08-29-2008 09:28 AM

there seems to be a glitch in vbulletin, if you click from view new posts, you cant view it...anywhere else you can... odd.

y8s 08-29-2008 10:16 AM

I'll be on good behavior from now on.

Outside of the BS forum.

Joe Perez 08-29-2008 11:34 AM

Hustler isn't banned. He just took a little vacation. And no, he wasn't the only one, or even the worst offender, really. He just happened to crap in the wrong thread at the wrong time.

Personally, I really enjoy the rough-n-tumble atmosphere we're always had around here. For the most part, it takes place in good fun between those of us who have been around long enough to have a feel for where the limits of good taste and candor are. The problem, as was pointed out by one of my fellow mods, is that we've been getting a lot of newbs recently who see that sort of behavior, assume it's just the way things are, and start behaving in a crude manner all the time, without respect for the "unwritten rules" of conduct. We know that Hustler isn't to be taken seriously, but some of the new folks apparently felt he was an example of how we roll.

So, we just felt a need to clarify things a bit. The BS section is still the BS section. And for that matter, we'll probably continue to tolerate light e-thugging in the meet-n-greet area. Everywhere else, those folks who are able to comport themselves in a mature fashion may go on with business as usual, without fear of reprisal. When someone crosses the line (and only we know where the line is) then there will be repercussions.

As a moderator on a political forum (where discussions can get quite heated), I understand the thin line you guys must walk. So far, I think you have all been very tolerant. Sometimes it's difficult to know where to draw the line, but I think all the mods have shown good judgement.

So can I still post enormous red text when a n00b posts a duplicate thread, or use my 800x600 picture version of the "search" function? Seriously, M.net has an FI section too. I come here because of the *lack* of newbies. It's awfully nice to sit around and chat about technical stuff without having to sift through "wut trbo shuld i get u guyz" threads.

A lot of people (brain, sam, etc) have put a lot of time and effort into forming one of the best FAQ sections I've ever seen. You can literally read those sections and turbocharge a car. I know, because I did it. My build thread (in the depths of the forum) has very few questions in it, because I was able to get everything I needed from forum searches. That means the current info is the latest stuff, like VVT control, the COP thread from a year ago, or pre-turbo water injection. Are we supposed to just sit around and be nice to new guys who come in and say "hay i want 2 turbo my kar", even though it's essentially insulting to all the guys who put the effort into that FAQ?

If the new guys don't want to search, then fuck them. They aren't the ones paying $3.50 a month to use this site. They aren't the ones viewing it every single day. I'll kindly remind you guys that there are new people who have integrated themselves into this society. Hell, I was one of them at one point. They used the FAQs, they searched, and they didn't ask fuck-off stupid questions.

There's another forum I'm on, SomethingAwful.com. 115,000 members, and new people are *horribly* hazed if they don't know "how" to post as soon as they start. Users are encouraged to lurk for years (the "been lurking since 2002, this is an awesome thread" post is not uncommon there) before they post, and it works. It's easily the best forum I'm on.

If you don't understand the culture here, shut the fuck up and read for a while. You'll pick up on it, and you shouldn't be posting for the first 3 months anyway. Read the FAQ, search the forums, and when you feel like you have something useful to contribute, go for it. We don't haze every new guy; every so often someone comes along that has clearly done their homework, and their remaining questions are answered in-depth, and everyone learns something. If you want to go fuck around and ask whether ur wrx turbo will fit on ur new HKS manifold and wutz a downpipe, then go embarass yourself at Miata.net. This is a tight-knit community, it's highly technical, and you're more than welcome to join us as long as you contribute.

I'm usually pretty level-headed, and I can appreciate a well-moderated website (hell, I mod at one). The *last* thing this place needs is more moderation.

Ben 08-29-2008 04:35 PM

yes

"No, fuck him. Fuck that, 'cause I'm from New York City, goddammit. Nobody take no cornbread from me. That goes for anyone of you motherfucking farmers who wanna start some shit. You fuck around with me, there's gonna be consequences and repercussions."

But anyway, I've learned quite a bit since I've been here. There is a lot of knowledge to be had with not a lot of BS to search through. I mentioned in a previous post that on other forums, when I do a search (with decent keywords) I still have to fight through a few pages of stupid one or ten post-count threads to find some useful information.

Here, I find it quickly since most of the dumb posts are stopped before they can get started.

I've also learned that the senior members here are usually worth listening to. Even if they sometimes act like douches, they are here for a reason. I like that. Not agreeing with everyone is helpful. Having discussions that get raunchy, but are still valid is helpful. I have disagreed with a few people who have been here longer than me, but I did so by using logic that I could clearly define, and I've not had the whole board jump me.

THAT is more meaningful than any amount of disclosures, agreements, or waivers that could be drawn up about this place.

icantthink4155 08-31-2008 02:15 PM

so is the media section specificly for miata type media or is it for any media?

In addition to Miatas, you may post any kind of media, so long as it involves or relates to tits.
