Angry Search function SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, it blows chunks lately. Seems to have gone to **** after the IB takeover of this forum. I've double checked it like 100 times now, I'll put in a key word thats OBVIOUSLY in the thread title of a thread I'm looking for, it comes back with "sorry no matches"....BS!!! then I open up the section, and find the thread manually, with the word clearly in the title. I've even put in a whole thread title, word for word letter for letter into this goddamn function, and it still comes back with "sorry - no matches"

I've hazed n00bs for not using the search function before because you could easily find pretty much anything you're looking for within seconds.

Well I guess that all went to **** with IB, and its completely useless now. So now we'll have to answer all their stupid questions cause the search function sucks, and there's no way to tell if they searched or not.

What words are you searching for and what threads? This way I can try and see if it does it on my machine.

Well just 2 seconds ago I was searching for Vash's BRZ thread. I put in "BRZ", nothing. I put in "Subaru", nothing. I search by "content" and I search by "title" and still nothing.

Quote:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms
And in case you think I'm getting it because word it too small, I tried many other queries using 1, 2, 3 and more words, just to make sure I'm not tripping up the function, and still nothing.

I mean honestly, its pretty much completely useless as of late.

I tried BRZ and even told it only to look in the insert BS section and it did not find it. Searching Subaru did pull up the thread. I will shoot Nolan a PM and point him to this thread and ask him what has changed.

I use google's specified search functions when trying to find something specific.

Let me google that for you

also: NO I do not want to view the mobile version of the site.

Instead of asking you once when you first load the site, it asks you every time you load a different page.

generally on forums there's a 4 character limit...
so brz wouldn't yield results.
worse comes to worse go to google and type "brz site:miataturbo.net" without the quotes.

You know it's good when the Admin says to just use google instead.

Is there a difference between the search bar at the top (it says "Search nOOb") and the button two inches below that with the little box? I assume they are the same, but I haven't ever tested.

its all the same. I've always hated how the vbulletin search function is.

I always use google to search, it's faster and can search through whatever site you're looking at much easier.

The search function seems to disregard small (<4) words when it perform the search (they are probably not indexed at all).

Search for "Su*" in thread title will find the Subaru thread and this one.
"BR*" will find other threads with longer words starting with br but not BRZ, the same is true for "ST*" for finding STI.
But searching for BEGI works.
Just pointing out that it's not the length of the search term, it's the length of the words you are trying to fiind that matter.

Google is better suited for finding anything related to a topic. The forum search is much better for finding THE thread you know is in there (filter on author, date, forum, etc, view thread or post). Different tools for different quests.

If in the past noobs couldn't use the search function on the site, how can we expect them to know to use google search for this site?

Maybe the "search noob" should be redone. "Search (using Google) Noob!" with a link to a how-to on using google to search forums...

seems ok to me. but i agree we should be able to search 3-letter words since there's a lot of car parts that are 3 letters.

It's a matter of more and with a margin of safety. 84k on the motor so comfortable pushing it. Will search for "can't make boost" next. Thanks.

I must say this is a continual annoyance for me. vbulletin seems to be used on almost all of the forums i visit on a daily basis. i can never search for any discussion and find it unless i happen to think of very long word search terms and get lucky.

how hard is it, seriously. are the tards at vbulletin incapable of using a solr index? solr is really good at this.
