Black Mesa

Its out! It is basically a remake of the original Half Life, except with amazing attention to detail. Also, 100% FREE! If you've been waiting to play the original, don't do it now. Play this!

Black Mesa: Re-visit the world that started the Half-Life continuum

I am downloading it from my seedbox now. I should be installing and playing and about half and hour. I have been doing my duty to seed the torrent since it first become available. I think I have a pretty good ratio on it now.

Reverant 09-15-2012 11:36 AM

Yeah, that's not a bad ratio.

Bryce 09-15-2012 11:38 AM

Dat throughput. Pretty sure my isp would cut service if I used that much data.

I have a seedbox in the Netherlands. There are no data limits what so ever and my upload and download speeds are limited to 73.3MB/s. The only downside is that I am limited to about 125GB of HD space which sucks.

Right now I am just waiting on my shitty Comcast connection to download it from there. The stupid 1MB/s is killing me.

Bryce 09-15-2012 12:10 PM

Now I'm not as envious. I dled it at over 2MB/s.

What torrent client should i use? Time to dl...

Bryce 09-15-2012 11:34 PM

Utorrent.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-16-2012 01:10 AM

Used to use buttorrent, and later utorrent/microtorrent. Now I use tixati and love it. It gives you a lot of control.

After 2 days, my ratio is at 2.5. Lol

You have a lot of options for prioritizing and throttling. Helps me not crash my router without giving up much bandwidth. Plus the GUI is really nice, lots of data and graphs.

Bryce 09-16-2012 06:24 AM

Eh. utorrent has prioritization and connection-limiting options for such purposes. Not sure about the graphs.

FAWK. Game is crashing every time I turn on the big fan thingy during Blast Pit. It is broken.

Bryce 09-16-2012 06:27 AM

Then I googled the issue. Turns out a crate that I intentionally left on the fan was the cause. Smash crate, game fixed. I <3 you, crowbar.

Erat 09-16-2012 03:13 PM

Pulling it off my box now.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-16-2012 03:21 PM

Im not saying uTorrent s bad or anything. Its great, I used it for a long time.
I like Tixati more, it does a lot more and is especially handy if you want to host your own torrents.
If I wanted to show everything that it could do Id have to take like 100 screen shots. You really just have to use it to see what I mean.

Saml01 09-16-2012 08:32 PM

Starting playing and all I gotta say is Nostalgia +++++++++++. Last time I played it I was 15. I cannot believe how amazing the game looks updated. Yes, its no deus ex or crisis or far cry, but given what was and what is now, its unbelievable. I could easily imagine this game selling as many copies as the first time if not more if valve had made it officially.

This. the guys remaking the game have done an amazing job.

Also you can tell a few brits worked on the textures etc.

Halfords polish in Gordons locker, and 'Chuckle Brothers' mugs :bowrofl:

Reverant 09-17-2012 06:38 AM

I still like the HEV suit voice better in the original.

Yeah but Isaac modified it in HL2, probably where the better voice came from ;)

Splitime 09-17-2012 09:18 AM

Walking along the mountain/cliff wall is I think honestly the first time a game has made me nervous. Rock sounds, bit of slip at edge, debree and the great view of the valley...

I didn't do much IRL yesterday.... the game sucked me in :P

Who was the baby in the picture?

I was so enamored yesterday that as I got to places I remembered I would try to find old screenshots just to see the evolution.

OH. I can play this game maxed out on my GTX260 and that makes me really happy. I am really trying to avoid upgrading right now.

Joe Perez 09-17-2012 12:58 PM

Y no haz multiplayer?

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-17-2012 01:06 PM

Black Mesa deathmatch?

Reverant 09-17-2012 01:25 PM

Played a couple of hours and quit. It doesn't remind me of the original at all, I don't know why. On top of that, on a couple of occasions where I had to jump (broken wall after you first get the crowbar, air duct that leads to the security station behind the lowering platform) it just wouldn't work. On the first case, I used a couple of things that I stacked and it somehow worked - it didn't work at all on the second case and I gave up.

I dunno, I just tire of playing against the computer in general. When Doom came out back in '93 and introduced the concept of realtime multiplayer FPS across a network, that was such a revolutionary leap forward that I pretty much lost all interest in single-player FPS gaming after that.

Don't get me wrong- I still love platformers like Sonic, but running around whacking a bunch of AI enemies with a crowbar just doesn't really captivate me. I kind of have the same gripe agaist MvM mode in TF2. Yeah, it's multiplayer, but the enemy is just wave after wave of mindless automoton. Adding a second joystick to Space Invaders would be about the same thing.

I think the emphasis in MvM is team work while PvP is basically one man army. Sure a medic will follow a heavy but that's as far as it usually goes. How often do you see two engineers work together?

I also like MvM because its a different type of play. IMHO its a lot less serious then PvP.

Tell me honestly you didn't have fun with us?

Yes, MvM definitely forces teamwork in a way that is unique. Although I believe your perspective in this is biased by the fact that we tend to organize our own team rather than using match-maker to group with randoms.

In regular play, it all depends upon the server / team. I have been on some serves in which multiple players did coordinate well. Engineers are actually an excellent example, particularly in CTF maps. I have often worked together with one or two other engineers to create a sentry nest around the intel, and whenever one spy got in, whichever engineer happened to be closest (and not dead) took care of repairing whatever sapping / damage had been done to everyone's buildings.

Additionally, I've sometimes teamed up with one or two other Pyros in Special Delivery to deny the enemy access to (or the ability to leave) their own spawn by the primary doors. This is particularly effective when your own team is on the lift and at least 2 or 3 other players are focused on defending the intel and repelling the attackers. As they are killed and forced back into spawn, we then prevent them from being able to get back to the lift (thus protecting our own intel-bearer), or at least causing them significant damage and revealing the spies so that the second-line troops can handle them more easily.

It is less serious, and that's part of what bugs me. I enjoy fighting against an intelligent enemy who is crafty, learns from his mistakes, and adapts to my techniques.

I also prefer map modes in which both teams are simultaneously on attack *and* defense, as it makes the game much more interesting when it's necessary to balance the tactical needs of achieving two objectives at the same time. Capture the Flag, Payload Race and Special Delivery in particular are good examples here. I occasionally play Control Point as well. Which reminds me, it's been a while since I was in a CP map.

Tell me honestly you didn't have fun with us?
Oh, don't get me wrong- it was a hell of a good game.

jeff_man 09-17-2012 03:13 PM

Took them long enough to finish this shit.

Bryce 09-17-2012 03:35 PM

I wonder how long it will be before a sven coop version comes out. Ive tried to get the GF into FPS games by playing sven with her. Its like having a puppy follow you around.

Network Engineer: Who the fuck is torrenting? Its like these people don't think I know what's going on

Me: Sorry, that's me

NE: Knock that shit off

Me: But... Black Mesa - Download !

NE: Oh shit! Carry on
:giggle:

You can download it from host, you don't have to get it off torrent.

Torrent was waaaaaaaaaaaaay faster

OK. Is it just my shoddy memory or did they change some of the level designs?

You are correct. My last playthrough was less than a year ago. Quite a few levels have changed. Some now incorporate new puzzle mechanics available with source engine (ie phsysics puzzles, electrical plugs, valve handles that you have to find and use). I find it quite enjoyable and it makes it more like I'm playing a new game for the first time.

Splitime 09-18-2012 10:29 AM

I am beginning to think I never played the original. I recognize nothing... but my memory does suck.

I think I was still into MUDs when it came out and had started college... so I was preoccupied.

Yeah, they've changed quite a lot, but IMO it doesn't ruin the game as they're only subtle differences.

The low res guns and acid/blood splatter really bugs me for some reason though.

My memory of the levels is sporadic.

I will say this, I am playing it on Normal and I definitely feel its more challenging than the original at the same difficulty.

I am really enjoying it too. I was just thinking it couldn't have looked or played like this back in the day. The acid/blood splatter is great. All in all so far I think they did an amazing job.

Bryce 09-18-2012 11:10 AM

Getting blood spatter on your gun and hands from close encounters with zombies is pretty sweet. I also noticed it seems to be more difficult. Damn marines seem to have aimbot hacks. It is basically impossible to have a 1 on 1 open area encounter with a rine without taking damage.

Erat 09-18-2012 11:22 AM

This is like when they remade goldeneye through source and made it free. Nothing beats the original.

Agree.

Erat 09-18-2012 11:44 AM

Eh.

I only played an hour of it last night. I always either love a game, or totally write it off within an hour.

richyvrlimited 09-18-2012 02:23 PM

I wouldn't say it beats the original, as that had the wow factor, it came from no-where and blew everything else out of the water, but my god it's very close.

jeff_man 09-18-2012 02:57 PM

So far I have no problem with the changes made and was happy to see ammo and guns were harder to find. I found some higher tier guns farther in the game then I had before.

shuiend 09-18-2012 03:13 PM

I am still trying to get out of the compound. I got stuck at a part where I have to jump across boxes. I keep missing the last jump, so I got mad and minimized the game. Maybe tonight I will try again and hopefully get past that section.

Saml01 09-18-2012 03:50 PM

Black Mesa shoulda had a 2 player co-op mode. Freeman + Barney tag team.

Reverant 09-18-2012 03:58 PM

And so should so many other games. Co-op vs the CPU is awesome.

Sprint, jump, crouch. When sprinting you have to jump earlier then normal.
