Good single player games
Now that the computer parts are ordered, I need to find some good single player games. Unfortunately, out here in the country I have no high speed internet. My two options are my wife's tethered phone which gives me about 130K download or satellite.
I can get up to 2MBS download, 300K upload on satellite but that's $109/mo. On top of that the latency is bad. Due to 45 miles each way, it's 500ms which will kill online gaming so I'll have to be content with single player stuff. So, what's good? One that I'm getting for sure is Amnesia-The Dark Descent. What about shoot-em-ups? Halo? COD? Does this suck single player? The thing that I liked about computer over x box or the like is Steam games are cheap. They had Aliens vs Predator for $3.99. Even if you play it for a few days that's cheap. |
Doom
GTA4 was a lot of fun. |
Mafia 2 is pretty good. Also, in case you've been living under a rock for the past couple months you'll know that people are obsessing over Skyrim.

Alpha protocol was a good mixture between RPG and 1st/3rd person shooter, but its not always shiny and has some really odd limitations to it. Mass Effect 2 was great. |

Go for the older RPGs. I'm playing Dragon Age right now. You can get the entire set with all expansions for about $30 online.
Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights are also both good. |

on a side note I am not arguing about its streamline/easy of use, but its pretty lame and cookie cutter compared to Morrowind's leveling system. Morrowind = Open-world RPG Skyrim = Conventional RPG with a million and one things to do. Alpha protocol was pretty annoying, but the concept was good enough that I got most of the way through it before calling it quits. About the same thing happened with Dragon Age 2, because that game sucked balls compared to DA. Anyways, if Morrowind could provide food and sexual pleasures, I am pretty sure some people would never stop playing that game. fucking massive, especially with the expansions. |
Do you have data limits on that cell phone? Serious Sam 3: BFE is awesome but only available through Steam ($30 right now).

Buying so far: The Orange Box - It's only $10 and gets me Portal, Half Life 2, HL2 EP1, HL2 EP2 Amnesia-The Dark Descent Remember, just because it's older doesn't mean anything to me. I haven't seen any of these before. Anything in the last 4-5 years is fine. |

Have you played much or finished it? |
are you into rpg story style games? If so, anything and everything made by bio-ware should be on your list.
|
I'm probably going to stay away from the rpg stuff, at least for now. Everyone tells me that I need to do Skyrim but it appears to be more of a commitment than I am willing to make, at least at this juncture. My last video game was Defender on Atari 2600, so I have about 25 years' worth of stuff to go through.
|
Well, I'm still going to have to recommend the mass effect series. They are rpg'ish, but what really stands out is the cinematic experience they provide. Knights of the Old Republic series is much the same, but I find mass effect more polished (kinda like beta vs final). Both are great story tellers.
|
I played each Halo start to finish about 30 times each. I'd play until I was breezing entire levels on LEGENDARY with no deaths.
|
^halo was the beginning of the end to real fps
|
If you havent gamed for a long time Saints row 1 & 2 are both really good.
|
Half Life 2, Quake 4, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2. Granted, these are all FPSs
|
OK, initial game order ended up as:
Amnesia-The Dark Descent Portal Half Life 2 entire franchise Team Fortress 2 (freebie) Dead Space Bioshock Total game investment $35. There are advantages to coming into this late. Should keep me busy for some time. |
decent list. I love dead space and bioshock, some f*cked up games. team fortress is useless w/o an internet connection. HL2 was great for it's time, but kinda dated now, Portal is a must play, but you can finish it fast. Still think you need to get one of the mass effect or kotor games.
|
Far Cry 2, solely for the amazing scenery, never-loading maps and nice selection of weapons (the AS-50 is badass)
|
that's a good one too, maintaining cars and weapons was super annoying though.
Also, no matter how hurt you are, just pull the bullets out of your wrist and your good as new  |
Crysis 2 is pretty good, and pretty, if your computer is built to those specs. But ultimately, it was made for the multiplayer, so the single player is limited, though I have played through several times.
Really aren't many newer single player PC games I can suggest aside from ones already listed. Plenty of fun older ones though. I'm a big fan of wasting away hours playing sim games. Civ4, old Alpha Centauri, or really anything Sid Meier created. |
Halo halo halo.
And halo. |

I almost forgot, FarCry and Crysis also have good single player campaigns.

Completed Portal tonight. Didn't know what to really expect. Back in my day you played games that never ended until you ran out of lives. There was no "end".
Bittersweet, I guess. :inb4welcometo2004: |
The cake is a lie is a lie is a lie is a lie.

Been playing the ---- out of Civilization 5. I cannot be stopped! Nothing as satisfying as nuking the ---- out of Gandhi. I had riflemen in the 1400's, nukes by the american revolution. I was a bit ahead of my time. About to start the space race around the civil war era. I can roll up on foreign soil in my single mechanized infantry unit and conquer city after city, fighting archers and cavalry soldiers.

Buy the Orange box, you will not regret it. The Half Life 2 episodes and Portal will keep you entertained for their entire duration. Then you can pick up Portal 2.
The Left 4 Dead games are great, but not so great single player. The bot AI is decent but so much of the games motivation comes from playing with other people. Then from Bethesda you have Fallout and the Elder Scrolls. Very good, and offers a ton of length if you get into it. The first Bioshock is amazing and the 2nd is pretty good as well. Anything else I can recommend as highly as those games will probably be on the the Playstation/Playstation 2 and be a geeky RPG that none of you have heard of, so Ill just leave it at that. EDIT: I should have read the damn thread before posting :/ |

Yo OP, check to see if they released Demon's Souls and Dark Souls on the PC. I've easily put 200 hours or so into Demon's Souls. It's one of the most pure and hardcore gaming experiences ever. No hand holding in those games. |
Edit: why the fuck is this in my new posts if last post was 2012??
Have to break these up into single and multi. Single - BG2 Shadows of arm - FF7 Multi - Tribes 1 - Tribes 2 - Pubg Nothing has come close to the skill/teamwork of T1/2 / Pubg And ff7 / bg2 are the essence of humanity in a cookie crunch bisket |
Skyrim
Disco Elysium Fallout 3/4 + New Vegas Deus Ex series |
Anyone on the Cyberpunk 2077 hype train?
First two hours is so far so good. My expectations were not that high and it seems to be exceeding them just slightly. Time will tell for sure. Solid story line. Good gameplay. Gunfights are fun and stealth isn't "splinter cell" boring. Fantastic graphics(i wish i could buy a new GPU). Acting and cut scenes are well done. Easy 8/10, just because we haven't gotten anything this good for a while. |
LOL, nice necropost! No idea why it showed up in your new posts. But since it got bumped - a few months ago I tried to get into my old Steam account when we were locked down in April for COVID. I haven't logged into it since probably 2012, LOL. I have no idea how to get into it nor what the login or password was. I don't even remember which email address I used to set up the account. I even tried to log in using a very old laptop that I have here with me that I only use for a single old program for work since it already had Steam on it. Updated Steam but then it errored saying that Steam is no longer supported on my operating system. What? Vista is no longer supported? LOL. Who knew? Probably lost everything. Maybe when I get back to the US the login is saved in my gaming computer. Was really hoping I could get in while in Vietnam. My new laptop would have been robust enough to run any of those games.
|
Just send a "forgot your password" recovery or whatever for all of your known emails. One of them will hit and then recover the account.
|
I'm more of a wait for games to drop in price after a year or two kind of person.

After about 50 hours in CyberPunk 2077 i have to admit i'm extremely happy with it. My favorite game of 2020 for sure.
For some reason it's getting really bad reviews. I guess people are unhappy with it, but since i'm on a PC even with a measly gtx980 graphics card i am able to run it perfectly fine. There are a fair bit of glitches and bugs. But i'd say that 98% of them are not game breaking. They have absolutely no effect on gameplay or anything. Just little annoyances. The biggest one was my weapon not being able to fire, simply dropping it and picking it back up fixed the issue. Most are like things flickering. Pop in is a thing, but hasn't bothered me at all. People that aren't going to play Cyberpunk because it's not polished or has bugs are full of shit, their loss. We've all played tons of broken games over the years (cough pubg cough) and didn't complain very much. They seem to be pumping out patches and updates so that's good. I found myself just roaming the city, doing little challenges and tasks randomly. It's a lot of fun to be able to play a game more freely. Reminds me of a mix of GTA and Watchdogs. It's so immersive. Probably the most immersive game i've ever played. This is settings on Medium, some stuff turned off, some stuff set to high, 1080p. It's tough to get a good balance of looks and framerate, every piece of hardware is different. I typically run 40-50fps with very good frame times and no dips. The game still looks fantastic at these lower settings. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2c0838e542.png https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6b456fe21e.png https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e3026c30d4.png https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dc306a892b.png |
Been playing a lot of Cyberpunk as well.. so much that it keeps me from working on the car, also really like the music in game. They did an excellent job. It's a bit unbalanced but mostly in a funny way. ( using a revolver with some perks that you can get in the first part of the game makes you a headshot monster. Instakilling everything).
It does help that the previous game they made, Witcher 3 is also among the list of best games for me. And it had at least the same kind of really bad launch full of bugs. They fixed it up and released really good DLC for the game. So |
