motion sims on a "budget"?
Well I got the pc on build and 39" Insignia hdtvs on order... Next question is motion sims.
I've been eyeing this as a starter platform: SimXperience Stage I Motion Simulator Kit But the crappy thing about their setup is that only the seat moves. I was thinking of building off their starter kit to have the entire rig balanced off the pivot point, using the actuators as they do. I'd just worry about overloading them. With my fat ass, seat, screens, tubing and all, I figure it'll be 300# The software supports rfactor and iracing... and several others. Would love to add this to the setup: Rear Traction Loss Simulation Module For Stage Series Simulators Their reasoning on why only the seat moves: The key to creating the properly scaled muscle pressures lies in the fact that we choose not to move the wheel and pedals, and only the occupant. You can easily see how under braking, for example, that we can apply the same pressure to the muscles in your wrist and forearms as would be applied in an actual vehicle. Simulators that attempt to move the entire cockpit (wheel included) could only create these pressures if they were able to create the exact same G-Forces as the real vehicle AND sustain them. Simple vibrating seat paddle simulators can create neither the muscle pressures or manipulate your sense of balance. |
I would think that would hold 300# it just may slow it down a bit. I wonder if you can find out what actuators they are using and then upgrade them for the added weight. The rest of the frame looks like it would be fine assuming when you add the mounts for everything it is not hung off the pivot point too far and is braced properly.

They use the 150mm SCN6 40Kgf actuators. That appears to be the largest ones they offer... the manufacturer, Mirai, offer some larger ones up to 60kg and to 300mm... but cost $1000ea

Computer looks super nice, should be more than enough to handle running iRacing at max settings.
Will the computer also be processing/controlling the motion frame? I don't have experience with motion sims outside of a brief visit to HPD's IndyCar simulator in Indianapolis. That thing was the real deal, after seeing it the idea of a motion sim at home seemed awesome but a little over-whelming. Mah, anyway, good luck! |

Luke - if I get the simxperience, it'll come with a control interface for the actuators... that seems like the most logical thing to do. You know you want/need one now that you have a kid in play - and to take up some of that Grand Am time you're missing..
