no you don't NEED it, but it's better. like I said, a friend of mine runs it off a standard xp laptop. it will serve its purpose, but is better and easier to use when used as a MCEPC extender.
I've never tried a DIVX file on the xbox, so don't know.

Here's the bottom line. Developers will make games for both systems because it's just smart. So any clear cut advantages one system has over another will for the most part be negated. Anything 360 Fanbois clame the ps3 sucks at will never show as a advantage for x-box because games will be cross platform. However! There are a few exceptions...being of course non-cross platform games and the ability to hold up for the future. In the battle of what isn't just good for the present but also the future the PS3 clearly wins.
It was built to be a 7 year system. Gee I wonder why it's so expensive?? I spend 600 dollars for a system lasting 7 years, or subscribe to the x-box plan and expect to buy a whole new system in 3 years that IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATABLE!! seriously...wtf? Since X-box is now developing number 3, they force sony to look like they are pulling the same crap because now they have to work on developing the ps4, which is something they weren't supposed to be doing for a while.
Coming back to the "how long will it last" x-box shot themselves in the foot. They have HD drives, but they specifically said they will never have games on HD disks. Whoops...guess who's now getting a crappy version of Unreal 3 because the game doesn't fit on a standard Dvd disk? Mean while there will be a Blue Ray edition of the game that will look as it was intended. Microsoft has already seen the cap of their media, and PS3 won't for a very long time. Which is also why RPG's are sticking to the PS3. The RPG developers want to use long and very intense cut scenes, and long games which they see can only reasonably done on blue ray.
My final comment is just that if you think that 360 is better because it has more games...you're wrong. The orginal X-box had several games that it was working with when it came out..and games kept coming out. All of them sucked with very very few exceptions. (I think to date the only 4 games I've enjoyed on x-box are Halo, Halo 2, Project Gotham 2, and Forza. and I don't even like single player halo) This year Sony will have 300 game titles launch I look forward to several.

Ok for me its not games. Ill find something on each system im not a fanboy of anything.
But. I want the system to act as a media extender. As long as it will play my video files and music over wireless or ethernet. Thats what im trying to find out. I want the PS3 but the xbox sounds like itll do more of what I want.
If you have a PS3 find this out for me. I dont care on the format. I record in MPEG and can convert to anything. Same thing with ripping DVDs

really? Your xbox1 came with a drive to play HD content? SNAP!!, **** your xbox1 is even wireless? Double Awesome.
I dont care about youtube. I want to know that it will play what I want, the simpliest way for me to keep my library is in vob format anyways.
The xbox360 is out because I dont care about games. I will find games on every system so thats a moot point.
Comes down to looks. PS3 FTW
Capabilitus. equal
Price. PS3 FTW
(plus if later i want an HD DVD drive, i can hook it to my media server, and watch it off the ps3 )
