Since so many recent threads have focused on it, I thought I'd make my own.

Biggest criteria: Resolution above **** (1366 x 768 is ****), low resolutions are likely unusable for me.
Lightweight
Small (14" is about as large as I want to go - Dell has several Ultrabooks that would be perfect for me if only they had a resolution higher than ****)

Other: Minimum is a quad core, or a dual core I7 (HT, I need 4 logical cores)

My difficulty? I've been looking all over Dell's site. Thanks to Flying Solo's help recently, I'd prefer to pick up something in the Dell line - but I can't find anything at a decent price with a resolution I can accept. Any ideas?

I've got an ancient 14" or 15" from years and years ago that has 1900x1200 resolution Hustler.

If they could do it then, why not NAOW? WHY NOT HUSTLER?!? Seriously, I've been looking at 15" and 15.6" even, they aren't any better res-wise.

(Edit) Oh good god, 900p is the max resolution for a 17" monitor? WTF happened over these past couple years?

You must be looking at the wrong model line if you are only seeing 900P screens on 17" models.

Here's a 900P 14" screen. I love the Envy series.

I haven't used Dell in a long time. I assume because they suck, generally. Then again, I could say my Sager sucks because the battery could be considered an extended UPS.

They make Windows notebooks. I'm impressed with their hardware reliability. I must also say that I have a $400 Dell Inspiron that's two years old, it get puts through hell of extreme heat and bouncing around the car and at the dyno, and I have no hardware failures or plug breakage. I cannot say the same for HP/Compaq. I'd just get the strongest notebook I could with an i5, 4GB of RAM, a 10-key, and anti-glare monitor that's not HP.

if you can live with 15" laptop, I highly recommend these guys. The one I got about a year ago was identical in specs/hardware to the top of the line MSI, but it was several hundred cheaper... only thing different was mine didn't have flashy LEDs and **** on it, lol.

Wow Rev, that last one is really tempting.

I'll have to think on it - I'd prefer to toss Dell the bucks due to flying solo's help, but if Dell doesn't have what I need in a laptop, that HP model is really tempting.

It's not just Dell. It's all the manufactures. Everyone is going with the stupid HD TV resolutions and LCDs have got worse. LCDs of proper resolution haven't gotten cheaper in the last 5 years, but more expensive. But, like Hustler said, you are looking for a tiny laptop and big resolution. The manufactures don't make many like that. The closest I can see from a quick look would be a 15" for you in the professional line: Dell Precision M4600 Mobile Workstation

I always wanted the biggest screen I could get not a 14". A 15" is still very mobile easy to use on a plane the M4600 comes with the NVIDIA Quadro (Great Line of Graphics Cards)

The Inspiron 14z is the closest to what I am looking for, Flying, and it would be absolutely perfect if it just had a larger resolution screen :(.

Dell and HP both have the cheap consumer line and their pro line. The consumer lines are just meh hardware. The Inspiron is Dell's consumer model. The Latitude is the professional line that fairs far better long term. Pro model can often be in slightly smaller chassis as well. I tend to go for the professional line when buying laptops myself.

That being said, I buy apple for home use ever since Apple acquired all the best FreeBSD developers to make OSX.

I'm sure vlad can come in here and tell you how much dell blows **** too.

Oh and my HP netbook blows pretty hard too. Overheats on any type of warm day while it's in the car.

There's a very strong chance I'm getting that Precision 4600 that Flying linked.

I can deal with a larger laptop for what it gives me I guess. I think there's a strong chance that I can fit all my school stuff in the laptop bag to boot, which really sets me up big time for what I need.
