the $1.30 in-car cam mount

I call it the CamClamp™®© :gay: Obviously not track-approved, BUT it does the job. Clamp to the package shelf brace and action! :D Clamp was .99 at BigLots and .23 for the spacer and bolt at the hardware store.

 Ya know we could have really played this one out. ;)
big lots is like the mini-harbor-freight for the neighborhood. The hardware store has a "chinese" tool bin, but most of the stuff costs about five times what it does at big lots.

Minglor86 07-26-2007 08:13 PM

That thing is kinda scary looking....

no love for ingenuity

I made this so I could post a follow up vid of the eBay BOV... finally. The real problem is the height- but that can be fixed with a C bracket. Got the job done.

Hmmm better than I thought it would do.

Atlanta93LE 07-27-2007 10:59 AM

Scared me for a sec there...thought that was my car! Until it was fast :(

Ben 07-27-2007 11:04 AM

When we were pulling by that semi on I-85 south at 3AM, I do not recall your car being slow.

Atlanta93LE 07-27-2007 11:08 AM

Well, certainly slower than Rob's ;)

m2cupcar 07-27-2007 11:25 AM

Fact: your car, my car, ben's car, (your name here) car = never fast enough :D
3AM? Late night working on the cars? ;)

Rage_Kage 07-28-2007 01:41 AM

wind noise ftl. put the top up

m2cupcar 07-28-2007 08:49 AM

yeah, well such are lunch-time escapades :inout:

Sadly, that is very true.
That was the night we got Ben's (Atl93 Ben) MS installed, knocked out a couple of things, and started tuning. I don't think either of us knew what time it was. But his car ran (pretty well) and we didn't hit any deer. Double bonus.

phase 2: .04 upgrade

Upgraded for better view point.
Added an "L" bracket with hole for cam "screw" and two rivets thru the L to the clip.

Nice. Looks a bit cheaper than what I engineered for Year One at road atlanta.

http://lh3.google.com/iscariot/Rsj6a...JPG?imgmax=800

It worked great in test runs. The camera was taking full video, sound wasn't too bad. First turn of the autox and the camera mount broke - I had stripped the damn plastic bolt in the bottom the camera. :(

Luckily the camera stayed in the car, too bad it shut itself off.

better picture of it's construction at http://picasaweb.google.com/iscariot...02064940042338

m2cupcar 08-19-2007 10:41 PM

Cheap mount is fine for street, but will surely launch photo equipment on track.
Below is what I've used for years in race cars - couple of steel pieces and an exhaust clamp... cheap too. :bigtu:

jayc72 08-20-2007 01:13 AM

Rob,

Do you have actual pictures of your exhaust clamp mount?

miatamania 08-20-2007 01:17 AM

M2...kinda random...but what gauges do you have...those are sweet!

nice mounting point though, I gotta figure out something for my camera...

m2cupcar 08-20-2007 09:19 AM

ya know I've made three of them (if I get to race somebody's car, I leave them in the car as a "thankyou) and never took a pic of one  That steel piece is C channel, just wide/deep enough to fit on the exhaust clamp flange between the bolt holes. The C makes a good pedestal for mounting the camera "seat" too. Adjustability is thru the exhaust clamp and elbow at the midsection. I wrap a slit hose around the roll cage bar and it does a good job of isolating vibration. (I have some video from the last race but photobucket is dead right now).

Gauges are autometer... can't remember the model, but they're about the most popular and cheapest: boost on the A pillar, EGT, AF and Oil Temp.

I just noticed the ricer steering wheel grip in the vid. :crx:

miatamania 08-20-2007 11:16 PM

doh, sorry, I meant your actually tach/speedo stuff...its red right?

m2cupcar 08-21-2007 08:43 AM

Faces and rings are IL Motorsport. The faces were "throw aways" that IL gave me because they're hard to read during the day. Don't bother me... tho white would probably work better with the other gauges. Doubt I could find red for them.

piratetim 08-21-2007 09:36 AM

I just wanted to say that Harbor freight is amazing. I kinda want to buy that 30$ radio control plane. Haha

I like them though. very nice :)

rock-solid dirt cheap in-car camera mount

Here's some pics. Scrap steel and one exhaust clamp = <$3. :bigtu: I usually wrap hose around the bar, but the hose around the ubolt works too.

Did anyone else see that crazy toupee chasing him down the road in the rear veiw??

m2cupcar 08-27-2007 11:17 AM

 that toupee won't come off w/o lots of blood tonto

thesnowboarder 09-10-2007 04:45 PM

chasecam.com the roll bar mount is quite good, 50 bucks can be expensive but its worth it to me since my $500 camera wont fall off

m2cupcar 09-12-2007 02:24 PM

Never had any cameras fall off. Ever.

mtncrvr 09-13-2007 08:25 PM

So have any of you used these mounts with a hard drive cam corder ? I was able to take video on my camera but HD Cam shuts down from vibration (but the mount I made is ghetto built off of windblocker - gonna make one similar to the ones posted here w/steel and mig and mount to the bar - thx for the idea).

m2cupcar 09-13-2007 09:27 PM

No. I wouldn't dare use a hard drive cam in a car for fear of beating it to death. I've lost two tape based camcorders in race cars so far. My last minidv last only two until it started having tracking issues. My sony handicam hi8 went 6 years before shaking some audio solder joints loose. Then another two years after that before having tape tracking issues. The best solution I've seen so far are the solid state card-based cams. They don't weigh anything and appear to take the abuse quite well. And if you can live with 640*480 @ 30fps (which is double ntsc) - they're cheap at under $150.

look here

mtncrvr 09-15-2007 08:45 PM

Not to bring the thread up again but.. built a solution based off several of the detailed picts here using a sony mini DV (yes I got the Best Buy warranty lol - they'll be replacing this a few times..). Will post picts / sample vid when I've umm figured out how to copy this to PC (there is software..). No vibration at all - somehow with top down there is no wind noise ? So it's worked out really well - I ended up building a bar to cross the rear section of the laterals on the hard dog (hardcore w/dbl diags, I don't have a harness bar but this worked out well and it's rediculous strong - also dampened via heater and radiator hose and no it's not ghetto). Then found a mount that will clamp to this (I was all for the weld / fab it all yourself solution however the wife didn't want to spend the day at her folks - where my mig is - no garage at this house... so we came up with an alternate no welding method). Thx for the pointers, should have some amusing video soon :-P

FYI: I did consider going the archos or alternate mini DVR/ bullet cam route however after adding up all the components this became very $$. I believe the route I went came out under $500 total (including the cam, ext warranty, clamp mount, some 1" 1/8th" thick box steel, 2x 3" exhaust clamps (didn't need the bottom half of the clamps, just the loops,1" radiator hose and some heater hose, misc hardware). All of the DVR solutions (which I really liked where really in the $800+ range to get the same quality video.. I did consider SD card based cams too however I like the ability to buy cheap tapes and reuse them - and when the miniDV breaks it's covered for the next 4 yrs (I also couldn't find a good selection of SD cams). Again thx for the pointers.
