theyre cheap because theyre used parts, thats how it works in the non-miata car world.

Ive always been amazed by miata hardtop prices, its absurd. You can find entire running miatas for cheaper than most USED hardtops

Supply and demand makes the world go round.

This. The Spec Miata guys are to blame for high hard top prices. They need it to race, and in theory it needs to be the factory piece. So, we pay.

Edited to add: I came off as hating the SMers. Not so. It should read, SM rules dictate a factory hardtop, this increases demand, and the price goes up.

nickt93 01-29-2010 03:36 PM

Exactly right. Is anyone else making new non-OEM Miata hardtops anymore? My '95 came with a snugtop and, while I know they don't command the pricetag that the OEM ones do, it seems to be physically and functionally identical. I realize they are not legal for SM, so that probably explains the price differential.

I also think some of it may be explained by Porsche owners maybe not wanting to roll their sleeves up to install and remove a hardtop, or being more likely to have garages and have less of a need for a hardtop.

Honestly for what some tops cost I wonder how hard it would be to do a bolt-in cage for a structure and then add sheet metal or fiber-glass and some basic Lexan windows. Not sure how legal that would be though for real racing. Obviousy its a no-go for SM.

retro fit it lol

popopopop 01-29-2010 03:58 PM

The hardtop market has been slim lately.

Eadohcturbo 01-29-2010 04:14 PM

I am glad mine came with a hardtop so i can afford other things:naughty:

triple88a 01-29-2010 05:23 PM

i wonder if there is a way to retrofit this biznich on a miata lol

Sparetire 01-29-2010 06:26 PM

I wonder if a 914 top could be made to work, or maybe even a 356 Speedster product. I dont know the actual measurements but I'll bet they are similar.

Similar might as well be worlds apart. "Well, it has a 3 inch gap at the back, a 2 inch gap in the middle over the windshield frame and a 5 in gap around the side windows, but it's similar to the OEM Miata hardtop."

driverdog 01-30-2010 09:55 AM

Probably the least expensive thing you will ever see on a Posche, they pay out the ass for most parts we buy cheaply.

Yeah but they sell duct tape in a wide range of colors :bowrofl:

miatauser884 01-30-2010 11:31 AM

someone who is handy should buy the oe hardtop molds on craigslist in Atlanta and figure out how to produce one for a $500 retail.

Gotpsi? 01-30-2010 11:35 AM

I got my factory hard top for $100, and the guy I got it from was the original owner and had only used it twice since it was new.
