Default OE oil cooler/warmer

To install the factory 1.8 oil cooler on a 1.6, does one need to source a longer section of threaded tube on which to mount it?

Good question, I don't think so. I just put a 97 motor in my miata, and was inspecting the oil cooler on it. I'm pretty sure it mounts like an oil filter sandwich plate, with a threaded nut that holds it down. Something like this:

That way it doesn't move around when you take the oil filter off etc.

OE oil cooler does need a long tube:
