1.6l Crossover tube removal.
Alright, so I got my mega squirt in yesterday, and I am going to try to start tuning this weekend.
I am removing the AFM, and was wondering if there is any proven downside to removing the crossover tube, and just running a piece of pipe off of the TB with a cone filter attached? Everything I have read on M.net says you loose some torque but I haven't seen any proof. Should I just adapt a cone filter to fit on the end of the x-over? Its probably going to be this way for a few months until I get the rest of my turbo parts. |

The stock crossover has a Helmholtz chamber built in (it's that big, nasty black box that makes it hard to get the tube off). This chamber supposedly addresses a flat spot at a certain RPM.
That said, the gains you will see from getting rid of the AFM will more than offset any loss from the Helmholtz chamber. I say have at it. Simpler is better. It's good to breathe your air away from the exhaust system, although you will still be dealing with air heated by the radiator. |
I'd buy a $6 coupler and $12 180* pipe from siliconeintakes.com and clamp your filter on the end of that pipe. Gets it away from the radiator and the header, putting it next to the intake manifold. As a benefit it gives you some pipe to drill/tap for your AIT sensor.

Sounds good to me, getting rid of the tube it is.
I already have a bunch of silicone couplers from the FMIC I had when i had my greddy kit. Just need to find some pipe. Thanks! |
