1.6l question

how much horse power can a stock block push befor the block blows up.

i dont mean with stock pistons stock lifters and all that i mean wat could i push out of this befor the block breaks. thw 1g dsm can go up to 600 hp till u will blow the block.?

Braineack 05-18-2007 01:49 PM

somewhere in the 250-350rwhp range.

aitracing-miata 05-18-2007 01:55 PM

does the 1.8 able to hold alote more or not really

is the 1.8L able to hold a lot more? Or not really?

Braineack 05-18-2007 01:57 PM

in factory form? probably about the same...

There is no known block failure on a 1.6 or 1.8 markp has throw the numbers of 400+ and maybe oringing the head other than that they are real tough some have taken the 1.8's into the 500+ range the only reason the 1.6 hasn't done this is becouse people are jealouse of its character and make the 1.8 out to be better than it realy is. :D

alright thanks for your help.

Brain he is stipulating built motor but stock block. Have you ever heard of a block failure outside of the GRM person who ran 20+ degrees of timming with no retard on a boosted motor.

aitracing-miata 05-18-2007 02:02 PM

oh ok. couse i keep going back in forth i want a car that can hold some good horsepower with out block falure. i even thought of dropping in a ls1 motor to git even more power out of it. couse i got a ls1 in my gerage and collecting dust so i been thinking aobut putting that in instead of build my motor up but i hate v8. i dont kno y but i dont like them.

aitracing-miata 05-18-2007 02:09 PM

right by the 3rd and 2nd on the out side its cracked all the way thru. and th first piston it broke a chuck of the block off

So it threw a rod through the side of the block?

magnamx-5 05-18-2007 02:11 PM

yes this is a rare occurance was it knocking its own brains out a t70 300 hp is nothing for that turbo right, why wasn't he trying for 500+ with such a huge turbo. Or do i not know garret?

magnamx-5 05-18-2007 02:12 PM

Throwing a rod through the block does not count as block failure it is rod failure. stock rods past 300 whp is getting into some serius think about upgrading time.

Braineack 05-18-2007 02:14 PM

This is exceptions, not the rule. There's luck, skill, and other factors- like condition- that determine how well your engine will hold at any power level beyond stock. People blow up stock engines, people blow up lightly modified engines and some people put over 200k miles on an engine with 150% more power. In the case of DSMs, engines that made 500+ hp to the wheels on a stock shortblock were usually running some detonation resistant fuel like C16/E85 or were injecting large amounts of methanol. Most of the time an engine fails it's not due simply to power, it's bad tuning- detonation. At high power levels a lot of things have to be going right for you.

Also, nearly everyone who has a modified DSM that you talk to will have "500hp" but it's probably bullshit. Most are lucky to break 300hp, even with biggy stage eleventeen Borg-Warner turbos, AEMs and 1000cc injectors.
