1.6L rebuild...again

I made a post a few weeks back about where to find a rebuild kit fairly priced.....everyone's response was.."well how do you know you need a rebuild?" well i don't but im in school at ATI (an automtive school) and i'm geting ready to have the chance to rebuild an engine MYSELF, either one of there engines, or one i provide..if i use mine i have to buy the parts, but i basically get a new engine out of it for very cheap, while i learn how to rebuild a miata engine, LOL. So my question again....any links/sites/etc.. where i can find a reasonably proced rebuild kit (rods, pistons, etc... included) stock and aftermarket options would be nice.....

thanks in advance guys,
Brian

Major Engine Kit: contains complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs (does not contain camshaft, timing kit or oil pump). Pistons & Rings: Std., .020, .040. Bearings: Std., 10, 20, 30.

326.00 sound like a decent price to anyone for that? (all oem grade parts i'm assuming)

I say if you are going to rebuild go the full nine yards while you have it out and replace the weak parts of the 1.6L with stronger and the parts that can withstand for a good time with OEM ones.

What do you want to build the engine to do? High revs? High boost? NA and nothing special?

I can tell you right now that if you arent planning on boosting or revving high, dont waste your money on any aftermarket crap, except maybe a flywheel. light rods might make a difference but not much. However, if you plan to rev high, theres a few major mods I would make sure to do: 1. Rods, less weight is your friend 2. solid lifters if going over 7800 3. upgraded oilpump gears 4. valve springs 5. lightened crankshaft and balanced rotating assembly. With all of that you could probably go to 9000 - 9500 rpm and gain 20 - 30 hp with some high lift/duration cams and portwork. Lots of work eh? probably a fun car to drive though.

For boost, i would say get some strong rods and forged pistons. Thats basically it, the rest will only add small little tiny bits of power. Porting would be the only other thing I would do. Actually i skimped out on the pistons myself because i dont plan on going higher than 7k rpm or more than 15psi.
