12psi club

Well today I installed one of these boostcontrol. It has been sitting in my car for about a month now, and I built it a couple weeks before that. I've been putting it off because I'm probably going to kill myself, or the engine, or the trans.

After a couple hours of beating the shit out of my car tuning I had everything working pretty good. Now I can start seriously worrying about breaking stuff. Yay.

94mx5red 04-05-2010 06:35 PM

What boost level were you at before turning it up?

FRT_Fun 04-05-2010 06:40 PM

8psi

I just joined the 12psi club....from 18 :giggle:. I just pulled in from redoing my VE table and the other day I reworked the spark table....it feels faster now than how it was before at 18psi. Toward the end of the season I'm going to turn it back up to maybe 15 or 16, but for now, I'm down for some reliable fun!

94mx5red 04-05-2010 07:39 PM

How does the difference in power feel?

I am at just under 8psi now. Unfortunately, I have some other issues to sort out before turning up the boost and joining the club.

fooger03 04-05-2010 08:36 PM

should we start the paperwork for your induction to the "bent rods" or "fuxored oil ring" clubs yet?

Lulz. If he had said "I joined the 20psi club" on a stock motor, then sure thing. Don't make the guy nervous at perfectly fine boost levels :P

I concur....I feel like I'm being really conservative now at 12psi instead of 18-19 where I was.....:giggle:

locomonkeyboricua 04-05-2010 10:43 PM

15 psi is ok with a good tune on stock engine. your weak points are a bad tune, heat, and the 5 speed.

FRT_Fun 04-05-2010 10:48 PM

There was a pretty big difference between 8psi and 12psi. At 8 the acceleration was more linear. Now with 12psi I can really feel when boost hits. I'm excited. But already planning to kick it up again after the summer.

WonTon 04-05-2010 10:51 PM

when my car was up and running i only got to experience 7psi. hopefully this time around ill be able to see 12-15psi.

Mach929 04-05-2010 11:23 PM

12psi is cool for year 2003

Splitime 04-05-2010 11:40 PM

If people keep talking about PSI.... I'm going to start punting some teeth in.

WonTon 04-05-2010 11:45 PM

PSI :giggle:

p51hellfire 04-05-2010 11:52 PM

lol doesn't it also depend on what turbo you have, EX: if u had a gt35r pushing 13psi as apposed to my t25 pushing 13... big difference no?

WonTon 04-06-2010 12:01 AM

yeah, but its more than just the turbo as well if im not mistaken.

caideN 04-06-2010 02:22 AM

what's psi?

Right, size of charge pipes, I/c, Intake mani etc...

FRT_Fun 04-06-2010 06:13 AM

12 > 8. That is all that matters.

Oscar 04-06-2010 06:28 AM

that's what she said

gospeed81 04-06-2010 07:41 AM

Turbo
Volumetric Efficiency
Displacement
Restrictions (IM, exhaust, TB, piping, air filter)

In essence it all boils down to mass flow rate (lb/min).

PSI is just a relative form of pressure ratio, which is only part of the equation.

I'm currently running at 12psi...which I'll admit is fun, but not nearly as much fun as FRTfun is having. That pressure ratio at redline on a 1.6L with my little peashooter is at the far edge of the efficiency island, over the 60% line. This yields a 1.4 DENSITY RATIO which is a much better determinant of power.

FRT has more displacement, and a turbo which flows more and is more efficient where we are operating...much more efficient. If you want to start a "12psi Club" I'd be happy to join and feel like I'm awesome...but if it were a "200whp+ Club" I'm afraid I'd be excluded, like I was through most of junior high.

8>12 if you're running 8psi on a GT30 and 12psi on a MSM IHI turbo :slap:

12>8 on MY car. Which, again, is what matters to ME. :D

DAMN you guys are nuts

only cars I know of running that kind of boost (and more) are dsm's, evo's, and supras

Sweet :) we almost have the same set up. Im very tempted to buy the begi intake manifold but i dont know if its worth the hp gain or not.

stranges12712 04-07-2010 06:52 PM

Meh supras...i raced my buddies TT supra last year i was at 20lbs but not full throttle and i kept with him then i started back firing cause i wasnt tuned...but one time i pulled on him and he started making excuses that his intercooler piping came off or a cupling. I will get a video this year. Very tempted on buying some stickys for the track but im scared of snapping an axle. And in need of a 6 speed swap soon but no one around here has 6 speeds :(

You would be surprised. With the turbo tech now available for under 2K (great efficency and response even on crappy setups) and affordable forged parts all over, you see a lot of oddball high boost stuff nowadays in some areas. Shoot even the better sections of the Mustang community are commonly running 10-15 psig now, with plenty in the 20 range. Termie guys are pretty much all running high teens boost now, with a lot of the them and the Lightning guys (who are crazier and blow up more stuff than even the DSMers) running into the high 20s. One other group that will probably run really high comp ratios are the Genesis guys. Its basically got a weak version of the 4B11 in there :)

18psi 04-08-2010 01:29 AM

I am far from a noob when it comes to turbocharging, and my miata is not the 1st or even the 5th turbo car I've owned, so I'm aware of all the cool new shit out there nowadays.

My point remains: there are VERY FEW miata's running over 15psi on a larger turbo. Even fewer running over 20. Its just not a huge turbo/big boost type of car. That's why I'm surprised.

Oh and to the other guy trashing supra's: race a 600whp (very common power level to a modded one) to 140mph and come back and say that again. After 100mph he will absolutely sodomize you

not just Sodomize.....skull fucked too!

18psi 04-08-2010 01:38 AM

I'm all for big power miata's. Hell I'm planning on going big myself, but lets not get carried away and start badmouthing other cars that are highway monsters just yet.
