141% Throttle!

2 Attachment(s)
This happened last night:

Attachment 176785

Snapped the throttle shaft in half, blew one end out of the throttle since I was boosting. Somehow the gods of speed were watching, it only broke in two pieces and one end blew out the throttle, other part stayed in the throttle body and no parts were ingested! Screws are fine, the shaft just snapped in half. Failed at 7650 RPMs

The funny thing is, I ran the same throttle for 9 years, and a few months ago I swapped it for a newer one with the idea being that my old one had seen so much abuse it was likely to fail any day. The new one failed instead!

Car is being needy lately, had several things all break at once. Oh well, this could have been 20x worse if it sucked in the parts into my motor.

EDIT: Also for some reason the img tags are showing the worlds smallest picture now? I guess there forum software changed or something?

Let's see some carnage pics.

Only because you are a complete and utter failure, both as a human being and as an engine builder.

Oh my god

afm 07-16-2016 12:11 PM

It's amazing that that unsupported screw didn't get ingested. Was this shaft epoxied or JB welded at all?

Joe Perez 07-16-2016 12:13 PM

I know, right?

It's like "Dude, stop bitching about having a little bit of metal flowing through your engine, and just fucking man up already. Godless Commie is dealing with a fucking military coup right now, and you're all like 'oh, woe is me, I had a little tiny piece of metal break off of my throttle shaft.' Pussy."

Completely stock, never disassembled or modified.

It's is amazing that screw didn't go into the engine. Basically where it broke, the throttle shaft is wrapped about 55% around the screw and that was JUST enough to keep it holding on. Somehow. Second pic shows this well.

thumpetto007 07-16-2016 01:46 PM

No doubt. I know most people that have these fail destroy their engine over it. It's crazy, because the last motor I broke a stock piston in half with this cylinder head, and it somehow stayed together in the cylinder (despite litterally being in 2 pieces cracked in half) and did not damage the cylinder head at all, just scuffed up the walls and piston. Very lucky!

Looks like I'm going to be ordering several parts over the weekend. fuel pump, filter, throttle body, and probably more since bad things usually come in 3's, fuel pump, TB, what will be next?

thumpetto007 07-16-2016 08:54 PM

throw out bearing?

I've had bad luck with to/release bearings in almost every car I've owned. I once brushed the clutch fork in my subaru, and it popped the tob off. the day. before. a track weekend.

Nope, a/c compressor failed! LOL Almost the entire a/c system is new except the compressor, so I guess it was old enough. It lost a seal in the front. I might try to rebuild it as I've never rebuilt an a/c compressor, and they seem simple enough. I've had bad luck with TOBs wearing out fast, but never completely just failed.

So are you going Skunk2, or another OEM one?

Not sure, gotta look into it before I order one. I've seen post here where people have to disassemble and modify the skunk2 to fix a few problems with them. After doing that, are they bombproof? Or do they still break too?

viperormiata 07-17-2016 12:36 PM

Blew the welds on the intake.
