4000 rpm idle
I have been getting my car remote tuned by Adam Peetz. I think he's done a good job. He's been patient through my fuel pump failures and power steering replacement. He had just started to finish my idle when I went to start it and the motor screamed to 4000 rpm. He said it cause either sticky throttle body or large vacuum leak. I cleaned the throttle body. That didn't work, so I replaced it with a spare. No Bueno. I fired up my homemade smoke machine. I found a small leak in the turbo, where the red circle is. That bolt is stripped and has been so for 7 years. Would that cause such an idle? When I get home I'll post a tune and log. I'm afraid to start it with that high idle. I'm going to pull the turbo and take it to a machinist, to see if he can restore the threads. It's a terrible cheap Chinese turbo, but I just paid to tune it, so I don't want to replace it. It doesn't hit 10psi until 4k rpm.

I just got home here's the obligatory tune and log. Log is of startup. I hope somebody can see something I can't.

I vote you just replace the turbo, I wouldn't want to put money into a cheap Chinese turbo. Adam is a great guy, just got my car tuned by him as well and its running amazing. Hope you can get it figured out! Did you check IAC?
|
You need to look for a leak post throttle body. To give you an idea, pulling a vacuum line off a well running car only causes a ~500rpm increase in idle. So you’re looking for a ~1/2” hole or bigger. Can you take a picture of the intake manifold?
|
Also your TPS is stuck at 2.8%, is it adjusted too tight?
|
I took a couple pics of the intake manifold. I smoke tested it again. This time I capped off the power brake line. Still no smoke showing anywhere. I tried disconnecting the iac and it made no difference. Turning on the ac dropped the rpm from 4000+ to around 2500. Pvc isn't stuck. To adjust the tps, just loosen the two screws and turn it counter clockwise? I'll try it. It kind of doesn't make sense, because the car was idling fine 5 minutes before this happened.

No, you check if the cable is too tight. If not, you calibrate it in TS.

Completely block the TB and IAC

No, pull the silicone elbow off, start the car, then block off the TB and the IAC. If the car dies, your IAC or TB are leaking, if it runs you have an issue with the intake manifold or injector seals.

And BTW, when an OG helps, use this... everytime. If I provide support and don't see the tiny sliver of appreciation that is a pos-cat, the support ends. Not being a dick, but the facebook level of eggplant entitlement around here has become intolerable.

I'm a little dim but I can understand that. Doing it in the morning. BTW my hoa and neighbors love a 4000 rpm idle. Already got 2 visitors. The thing is I'm the vice president of the hoa and the only board member that isn't a snowboard. You should see their faces when I tell them that they have to file the complaint with me.

I'm going to say he didn't see your post because he was busy typing his response, :dunno::facepalm:, but still ... |
Don't want to be an ass. You deserve a cat, however, I don't know howvtovgive them.

Have you checked the throttle cable yet? With car off, read TPS, go WOT and disconnect the cable, then see what your TPS reads. If it's lower than what you read with the cable connected, it's too tight.
Now, say "ok, I'll do this immediately", and don't just go and do another smoke test. |
I would give you guys a bushelful of cats if I knew how. Your impressive collective knowledge has always had my head spinning. You're so far advance.
when I run the car and block off the throttle body, do I leave the plug in the turbo? I just got home. |
The tps was off by 10 points. I recalibrate it. I started the car and slid a piece of plastic in front of the throttle body. The engine immediately choked and died. My issue is that's the 2nd throttle body and the condition hasn't changed. I'm going to put the original throttle body on now, just because it's prettier and I don't have a damn clue what to due next.
