6 speed MS trans

Is a MS 6 spd trans worth 1100 shipped?

Loki047 09-06-2007 05:14 PM

if you vote, post a bump

Ben 09-06-2007 05:16 PM

I see the tranny generally going for about $700+/- $100. Figure freight to be $100-150.

Unless your power ambitions are high, get a 5 speed; you'll be happier with the ratios.

cjernigan 09-06-2007 05:17 PM

The only reason i would want a 6spd is if i was going to swap the 6th gear for a something with a taller ratio. The strength of the 6spd is nice, but do you need it.
If you want a taller ratio, you should swap your ring gear and pinion for something like a 3.6 or w/e people were discussing recently.

Loki047 09-06-2007 05:18 PM

I will need the strength and I guess the MS 6 spds are stronger than normal 6spds

Ben 09-06-2007 05:27 PM

I am unaware of any differences in the tranny. The MS does have beefier axles than non MS cars, making the rear swap a little more enticing. Not that I've ever heard of an axle snapping though.

You'll want a 3.6 R&P if you get the 6 speed. 1st is pretty useless, you might be better starting in 2nd.

cjernigan 09-06-2007 05:41 PM

Starting in 2nd with the 5spd is nice when accelerating quickly. With the stock 4.10 or 4.3s my '99 has. Pretty sure it's 4.10.

paul 09-06-2007 06:49 PM

I love the gearing with my 5speed trans and 3.90 rear. Can't imagine shortening it with a 6speed trans or 4.10/4.30 rear.

Now 2nd gear gets me just over 60mph

krayzrac3r 09-06-2007 07:03 PM

paul i just got the 3.9 for my 5 speed also however its not installed yet. Just curious what a couple of your gears do (mph) especially 1st,3rd, and 4th of you dont mind

obviously you can't go by what the speedo says because it will show the same speed as it did with the 4.10 rear. i will go out and get some numbers for you on my tomtom.

brb...

xturner 09-06-2007 07:20 PM

My miata is still NA, but in my old GTI turbo, it liked the longer gear ratios so you could stay in the boost longer in each gear. I kind of like the idea of the 5-speed w/ 3.9 - you should be producing plenty of torque so no wories about the 1st-gear launch.

When I was on the Vortex, you should have seen all the whiny posts from the guys with 337's and other special-edition models that had 6-speeds with shorter ratios. Apparently(they said) 5-speeds put up better 0-60 and 0-90 numbers because ratios forced an extra upshift for the 6-speeds.

paul 09-06-2007 08:11 PM

OK, results from my TomTom which I've determined is pretty accurate once it catches up so that meant trying to keep it right at the rev limit which is pretty tricky.

5 speed 94 trans
3.90 Torsen
215/45/15 tires which are a bit smaller than 205/50/15's

1st- 37mph
2nd- 63mph
3rd- 90mph*
4th- 118mph*

When I get the thing on a dyno I'll post those numbers.

*uhhh, these speeds were reached on a closed course, not a public roadway ;)

Savington 09-06-2007 08:13 PM

Paul, did you have a GPS on that "track event" or were you using the stock speedometer?

Ben 09-06-2007 08:17 PM

fuck that 'closed course' bullshit, we're not pussies here

Here, I'll make you feel more comfortable, "I've had my car to rev limit in 5th gear on a public highway on multiple occasions."

magnamx-5 09-06-2007 08:29 PM

I did it not 1/2 a mile from my house hell. If you have enough hp it comes up pretty quick

paul 09-06-2007 08:31 PM

Those were the speeds on the GPS. They do mimic the speeds shown on the speedo now that it's more accurate with that rear and tire combo than it was from the factory.

haha, awesome. at 52 points on my license I don't need to be hitting 150+ mph on the Garden State Parkway.

plus my girlfriend was in the car...

y8s 09-06-2007 09:12 PM

under 300 rwhp, not worth it.
over 300 rwhp, questionable.

soflarick 09-06-2007 10:12 PM

I have a rebuilt 5-speed and 3.90s. Excellent combo for my engine's output. I'd only consider the 6-speed if the engine makes enough that reliability is a concern, but then I'd want a set of 3.63s instead of the 3.90s. With the 3.90s, first gear has a use. Cruising rpms are a bit lower as well. I think the longer one waits to get a 6 speed, the lower the prices may become as more cars with them wind up in the boneyard.

neogenesis2004 09-06-2007 11:57 PM

I got mine for $650 shipped. My power goals are very ambitious.

Newbsauce 09-07-2007 07:06 AM

I saw the last one on ebay go for like 700, theres no voting option for "That shit is overpriced, wait and get a different 6 speed"

all the supercharger guys in dallas say 230whp or so is the limit. I don't know why people constantly break shit out here...and if I hear "turbo cars are unreliable" anymore I'm going to stab myself.

Loki047 09-07-2007 09:18 AM

well its torque vs hp, and torque breaks things HP doesnt.

krayzrac3r 09-07-2007 10:59 AM

paul thanks a lot for goin out there and getting the info

230 whp is the limit...

i'm nearly 30 over that limit. my tranny has 80,000 miles on it. it's not even notchy or anything.

Loki047 09-07-2007 12:13 PM

ARRGGHh its the torque, doesnt matter what HP your at

With what rearend and how fast was that? A friend of mine was asking me what a miata tops out at the other day and I couldnt tell him. But I know for sure his Sky Redline will take it waaaay higher, lol.

Freight is ~$50 thru DHL to an office.... it went to FL? from MI.

And my vote is: get a TII Rx-7 Trans :) and don't worry about anything.... + their cheap - mine was around 200

We top out where ever our redline and gears run out miatas are hp limited nothing else that being said mine hits 130+ pretty easily at 14 psi. And should go to 145-150 given the need to go there.
Dhark the T2 tranny swap is very labor intensive though i dont think most of us wanna go with that much work.

SOL General 09-09-2007 01:56 PM

t2 = very labor intensive, someone needs to come out with a kit.
Quafie gearset = Too expensive, FM charges you up the butt
6 speed = Kind of expensive, plus need (want) new R&P.

There really isnt anything that is easy, and cheap to fix beside getting 5-6 transmission that can sit in your garage.

Does anyone know if the MS Axels will fit in a 96 Torsen II?

turbored 09-09-2007 02:28 PM

bought mine 625 shipped on eBay. It was the cleanest tranny I've ever seen.

I'm still running a 4.30:1 r&p. I have a 4.10:1 rear I need to stuff into the car though.

How fast is that, I :dunno:, you can do the math. With enough HP you can bury the speedo needle.

magnamx-5 09-09-2007 09:38 PM

There is a good chance they will work together. The MS axels are suposed to be beefier from what i hear how much beefier is the question.

SOL General 09-09-2007 09:55 PM

Well since no one makes higher hp axels I guess that trying to find MS axels is what I am going to have to find

cjernigan 09-09-2007 10:10 PM

Look up partsgroup.com they're parting that '04 out.
