95 intake manifold into msm ?
Hi guys, I have a 2005 msm. I haven't compared the gaskets yet to verify but, I was wondering, is this doable ? are there any benefits? how difficult would it be to achieve ?
|
benefits? lol are you high?
|
thanks for the great input !!!!!!!!
|
Boy, we're just racking them up this week.
What in gods name are you hoping to accomplish by this? Taking a manifold 10 years older than your car, with different ports and sensors and hoping it will fit because...racecar? |

You mean input? I get this feeling you're so stupid you don't even comprehend why I'm being facetious. In for eggplant. |
wow grow up seriously !! just looking for info that's all. No need for insults
|
I'm just trying to understand your logic.
Seriously, can you explain why you're attempting to do this? Did someone tell you that the 95 manifold is somehow better than the MSM? |
To answer your question: it wont work. The ports and bolt pattern might be the same or close, but the spacing relative to the top of the head is different if I remember correctly.

I seriously can't comprehend what is the goal here. Did you hear that it would flow better? Did you pick up a polished manifold to add some underhood bling?

I've only worked 01 and above miatas. Never worked on the early 1.8 engines and I was wondering if these parts were interchangeable. Plus the msm intake manifold is restrictive due to the second butterfly system. I've eliminated this system before in cars that I worked on and gutted the upper and lower plenum and I've seen great results but involves a lot of work. Just wanted to see if there was a cheaper way to get power and flow
|
Gutting the plenum in an MSM or 01+ intake mani produces nothing but wasted time and effort. Removing the vtcs butterflies might be a marginal improvement, if only because they make life miserable until the car warms up. Bottom line is you're not gaining power from doing this. You can buy a squaretop or use a 99-00 mani and wire in the vics solenoid. Taht should gain you a couple hp and both bolt right up. Pre-99 intakes wont work
|
I understand what u say about gutting the plenum to much work for little gain but, low end torque is improved and u do see a little increase in HP and also depends if the porting is done by someone with experience.
|
low end torque is improved with better velocity.
peak/top end flow is improved with plenum volume. hogging out the plenum and runners increases volume and decreases velocity. there are numerous dyno plots on miata's proving this or do you have an actual explanation and testing to prove otherwise? |
This is the experience I have with working on these engines and dyno testing.
I have a spare plenum, I will be dyno testing my msm in stock trim and with ported plenum. I will post results and progress with the gutted plenum and thanks the great input |
Please do. Interested to see how the results look and how the unicorn festival went.

Hopefully next year they'll move back out of the catacombs and to a spot that's more easily accessible. But all in all, it was a Saturday well spent. (I don't think I'll ever get the taste of cotton candy out of my tail...) |
