99 head build

So... I'm getting '99 head from Ben.
I need suggestions on what to do with it. What cams should I run, what valvetrain to get for it. I want to rev to 7600rpm or so and I want car to be streetable.

Hmm... Really? Did you get my package out to me? :)

PS, remember it comes with a valvetrain. To run 7600, you'd only need to add cams--and there's several choices.

And let us not forget the coils I overnighted to Slava last week :magna:

7600 once in a while or 7600 reliably?

UrbanSoot 02-11-2008 08:19 PM

7600 reliably.

ps: monitor is in my trunk outside. i cant leave work right now but if i can get out of here before ups store closes - its out today ;)

oh, and i found original box from that monitor too!

UrbanSoot 02-11-2008 08:35 PM

hehehe... guess what i just dropped off at ups store? ;)

I bought a set of 94/95 valvesprings and SI +1mm valves for the 00 head on my engine. The earlier valvesprings are a little stiffer than the 99/00, since the solid lifters are lighter than the earlier hydraulic lifters, the rpm range is greater. I don't remember the exact weight diff between OEM valves and the SI valves, but I remember it being so insignificant the shop didn't care. If I did it again, I'd go for the FM spring kit. The spring rates AFAIK are a little lower in the FM kit than elsewhere, yet more than the 94/95 springs, and the Ti retainers are nice. Too much spring rate is going to create more parasitic drag, beat on the timing belt, beat on the cams, etc etc. I set my rev limiter to 7600 but don't really go there much, only on track if I need the rpms for certain corners.

i hit 7600 in my msm all the time
thanks hydra

My engine wasn't making worthwhile power up there, so there was little reason to rev it like that. Maybe it'll be different with the 2871R going on.

UrbanSoot 02-12-2008 05:10 PM

last time on track i had to rev it all the way on 2nd gear because i didnt have time to shift to 3rd. i have my rev limiter at 7000rpm right now. those 600rpm will REALLY help :)

Another good reason to run springs a little stiffer is to help keep the valves closed when the boost pressure is acting against the valves. Again, there's a point of diminishing returns.

UrbanSoot 02-12-2008 06:26 PM

so fm valve springs and which valves? also, what kind of cams should i get?

Stealth97 02-12-2008 06:35 PM

Check out SI valves. I got a full set for around $220 If I recall.. I got +1mm on the intake and standard size on the exhaust. Cams will depend a lot on what your goals are. How to pick a cam for those goals, I dunno

UrbanSoot 02-12-2008 06:45 PM

i would love to get stock cams but its really hard to find them...

Arkmage 02-12-2008 07:43 PM

call crane or one of the other major cam grinders... their prices on custom units are fair and they can help you determine specs based on your application and goals.

y8s 02-12-2008 08:55 PM

elgin cams, integral cams, and check around for supertech valves and Ti retainers etc.

course for another 230 you can have shim under bucket ;)

soflarick 02-12-2008 10:09 PM

I had my 99 head ported by the shop that did the engine, installed +1mm SI valves, 94/95 valvesprings, WebCams camshafts, Fidanza cam gears. If I could do it again I'd get the FM spring/retainer kit and have the valves/chambers/exhaust ports coated. I did a little research a few months ago and I recall the FM spring specs are a little lighter than the Supertech springs. I felt that with the mild lift of the Webcams I would rather run the FM springs as stiffer springs at that point would have been overkill. I don't think there was much of a price difference, but I don't remember. The 99/00 lifters are already lighter than the earlier hydraulics. Adjusting valve clearances might be a PITA with shim under bucket, but I never looked into the benefits/liabilities of that setup. I think you can run more aggressive cams with shim under bucket, but I wasn't going to go crazy on cam specs anyway. WebCams spec'd a set of cams for me when I gave their tech guy all the information on my engine, car, combo etc etc. Specs are very close to their off the shelf grind listed on their website. For the cost of cams, I'll increase boost before changing cams again.

You should buy a book or two on modifying cylinder heads and read up, then do some custom headwork and pickup a 15-20% increase in flow.

UrbanSoot 02-13-2008 01:03 PM

id rather just drop it at a shop and tell them what to do with it :)
i have no space/time to do any kind of work like that myself
