99 with unknown past, new engine, no start

I recently purchased a 99 that had rod failure on #3 resulting in a hole in both sides of the block :jerkit: The car was hoared around thru several auctions by dealers before I picked it up so the past history is unknown. It has empty dual gauge A pillar mounts, a painted block, beefy clutch, receipt for crank polish and scribbles about AFR and boost in the owners manual that lead me to suspect it probably was boosted at some point. It has a header so I am wondering if it was SC <shrug>

I plopped in an 03 bottom end and a replacement 99 head and now the car will not start. There is no fuel so further inspection shows the fuel pump is not getting any power. Jumpering FP and Ground in the diag connector fires the fuel pump which we are now assuming is good.

My understanding is that the fuel pump relay is under the dash on the driver's side. Whilst standing on my head I can identify 4 relays under the dash. Two only have a couple of wires (one of which says turn signal) which leave two others that seem to have enough connections to be a contender. One of those two has a yellow connector (that I cannot get to release to save my ass). Any ideas on which one is the FP relay?

Also....if all else is well should the car run with the FP/G jumpered (the returnless fuel system is an unknown variable to me)? I am wondering if the cam position sensor, MAF, and/or crank sensor is kaput maybe? I know the NAs will not send any fuel if they do not have a CAS signal for example... Another variable is the crank sensor...the one that came with the car (in a box in the trunk...yeah...fun times) looks like this: Photo Gallery: /99miata/ready2run/mystery.JPG and I had no luck mounting it...so I nabbed the one (which looks completely different) from the 99 engine in my 96 CSP car since I know it works ;)

FWIW: Throwing an OBDII scanner on it shows no codes....

Thanks for any ideas

So...not a single person here can identify the fuel pump relay?

Come on guys...help me out here! :loser:

let me know if this helps you out. http://alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V1...59205/78833485

FWIW...I just spoke with a local Mazda dealer...they cannot confirm the 99 Miata even has a fuel pump relay <sigh>

They list the ones in the above diagram as:

Outboard two are:

Circuit open (WTF ever that is)
Bose

Inboard three are:

turn signal
rear defrost
blower motor

The three under the hood on the passenger side fender from front to back are:

head lamp
small lamp
coolant fan

and the horn relay is in the fuse box

<rubs temples>

mazda is just so lazy they wont enter 99 miata and search for fuel relay like i did in alldata. so let me know if you need any things.

I found some time to work on the car this evening and am happy to report it runs great now

I replaced the known good crank angle sensor from my MSPNP 99 engine in my CSP car with a different type crank sensor that came in a box of crap in the back of the car and it fired right up and ran great.

What have we learned: No crank signal = no fuel

Glad you were able to bring her back to life. My CAS wiring came loose on my not long after I got it running and it drove me nuts trying to figure out what was wrong with the thing. The stupid little stuff seems like the most annoying/difficult to diagnose.
