ABS plastic egr blockoff plate?
I have a 3d printer and was thinking of anything I could make to save some time and cash in my build. Initially I wanted to try to 3d print my coolant re-route spacer and block off plate, but the glass transition temp of abs plastic is ~105*C which kind of makes anything touching coolant a bad idea as coolant temps can go above that.
My other idea was an egr blockoff plate? I know it's an easy/cheap item to just get, but I was curious if it would work made out of a thick 100% infill piece of abs? I was thinking the intake manifold temps shouldn't be that high... but that's just a guess. Can anyone chime in? Maybe I'll just use the abs plate as a template for an aluminum one... Otherwise I'll stick to interior pieces and brackets! |
Kinda waste of time and money when the alum ones are so cheap and work perfect.
You'd be surprised at how hot the IM actually gets at times. You can even make some out of scrap steel and would take no more than 15-30 min stick to interior parts |
Makes sense, guess I got a little carried away with the 3d printed parts. At least I have this sweet orange template now!

I like to use CAD to design small parts like that.
Cardboard aided design. |
laugh all you want... I'm looking into polycarbonate filaments and other high temp materials to print with and eventually use as prototypes... My heated bed doesn't go high enough so I may encounter warping but I'm down to give it a shot with glue and a high temp heated bed!
But till then this abs plate made a sweet template for my aluminum blockoff plate I made today. What this REALLY outlines is my need for a homebrew cnc mill. Stay tuned. (Or I'll just hijack my school's mills now and then). |

The block off plate won't see exhaust gas though so that wouldn't be an issue but it would take longer to design and print one than to make one out of some scrap aluminium. Took me about 10min to make one using the gasket as a template.
