ACT: XDPP+Street disc vs. HDPP+4puck disc
For 220rwhp, which one would you go with and why? I am considering going to an HD pressure plate with a 4-puck or 6-puck disc to save a little cash. The car doesn't get driven in stop-and-go traffic, and I think I'll like the ability to really thrash it on the track and not worry about it. I think I can source an HDPP/4-puck for around $350, vs. $420 for an XT w/ street disc. This is all for a 1.8, and I will probably keep a stock flywheel (may have it machined).

I have the ACT HD setup and im in the 250whp range with no issues. I have heard they will last a little longer than most expect.

the puck clutches are only a problem taking off from a stop. if you dont do that much dont worry about it. it will always hold more than a street/organic disk.

it will be a workout for your leg if you get stuck in stop and go traffic, lol...

I was given a chance to drive a miata with a 6-puck disc. I understand how everyone says they are on/off. You could easily get used to it, just gotta alter your style a bit.

I have a spec 4 puck and while it takes a bit more attention, I drive it around town all the time and somehow i do just fine. I do kill it or stutter taking off though every once in a while if im kinda tired and lazy with my clutch foot. Also I hve the stock flywheel and i would bet a lightened flywheel would be hell with that clutch.

I plan to use a slightly lightened stock flywheel.
What about going down to a 1.6 puck-style clutch with the 1.8? That would save me even more weight and money. I would need to source a used flywheel, but that shouldn't be a huge problem. |
well i have a 1.6 flywheel sitting outside and i dont expect to ever use it . By the way I am using the 1.6 flywheel on my setup if that makes any difference. However, to be perfectly honest, if you have a 1.8 flywheel, just get it resurfaced (and even lightened) and go with the puck clutch. By being hard to drive with a light flywheel, I was referring to under 12 pounds and even then I dont know.

Becides when they were stock, all of my miata's had 6-puck clutches. And they were daily drivers and I drove in stop and go traffic all the time. Its not as bad as you all think. After you get the clutch in, it takes maybe a day of driving to get use to it.

I drove Neogenesis' 6-puck. First time I've ever driven a puck. It wasn't too difficult, it just engages without feathering into it. I'm sure I could master it within a few hours. Biggest trick was to let the traffic ahead move forward a bit before you startup so you can just whip along.

Never heard of the XT failing at thrashing and 220 whp. I had one in my car for a good amount of thrashing at 220 whp and even some 280 whp. It never slipped or failed me. It's still going strong in the car with the new owner. Through 3 owners that I know of actually.
