What's the best way to cut the timing belt cover off, and can I use my 1.6 waterneck, or what plug to buy for the front water port?

Just get a BP valve cover from a FWD car. I'll give you one for free if you don't mind it saying ford on it ;)

Actually I'm not sure if those fit on the 1.6 or just the 1.8. Someone can confirm or deny.

The cam cover is aluminum. Cut the front of it off with whatever's handy. Zis wheel would work fine.

Looks like you're going to need to get creative with the front water neck. Recommend welding it shut and going with the reroute.

Did you score a 6 spd too?

I cut my valve cover with a sawzall, then ground it smooth with a grinder with a flapper wheel.

the vin says no (so much for 10+psi). I haven't actually seen the motor yet though. I gave $750 for the 60k motor, trans, and complete rear subframe with lsd.

I'm trading bottom ends for a 9.0 with some cash on top, then considering just running that setup, or sending it to the machine shop with or without getting ceramic coating on the piston tops. John Day of spec miata fame is doing the machine work and assembly.


Any chance the stock 1.6dp will bolt up to that one? I'd really like to tune and play with ms before installing the turbo stuffs, and get break-in out of the way.

It took me 5 weeks to get this shit after the car hit the salvage yard, searched for this with nothing but disaster for almost a year.

Assuming that the 4.30 rear is from the same car, then it is a 5spd.

oh, and where is the "best" place to put the oil return? I've read the place everyone uses when installed in the car is a compromise.

I'd pick the standard location for the oil return, it's served everyone well for a long time.

Corky's got instructions for the return on his site. The front coolant port is a 30mm plug, use gasket adhesive on the plug to ensure it doesn't work loose. I used a Dremel with a stout cutoff wheel to score then grind through the front belt cover, then a sanding wheel to smooth it out. Worked out well.

Sometimes with the motor out of the car you can place the oil drain a little farther back. towards the motor mount.

I guess it also depends on the length of my hose. Thanks for the info gays. I'm still looking for info on the dp bolting up. I know it won't but I'd feel like a real dumbass if I spend time looking for a 1.8 header and dp to borrow when it would work just fine.

but it will bolt up to a 94-97 stock header so find one of those. ton's of guys here must have em laying around. EGR won't line up but since you have a 1.6 you would plug that anyway.
