Airbag codes 1 and 2 on an NB

So I had an accident a while back, and the car has been repaired and back on the road.
The problem is with the airbag module, aka SAS.

Both airbags have been replaced, and the seatbelts were repaired.
I naturally had a code 2, indicating the SAS had fired the airbags.

So, after a couple of unsuccesful attempts to have the unit "reset", I bought a used SAS unit off a car which had been stripped for race conversion. The owner assured me the airbags had never been deployed in that car.

I replaced the SAS unit, and got both code 1 and code 2 as soon as I turned the key on.

Here's what I do not understand:
There was never a code 1 before.
Code 1, as far as I know, means a bad ground. (There are two grounds on the unit). I checked both grounds, one behind the right kickpanel, and one behind the pass side headlight, but have not verified continuity between the SAS and those points due to the fact that it is just too damn time consuming to take the dash out one more time, so far..
Code 2 means the unit is bad - due to deployed airbags.

My question is, does it mean anything else if both code 1 and code 2 are present at the same time?

Would anyone be kind enough to email me the relevant troubleshooting pages of the miata manual please?

Has anyone experienced such a problem?

Removing the airbags, or rendering them inoperable is not an option, per my wife.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...
