Alternator Belt Replacement

Hey fellas, I'm changing my alternator belt later today due to it squeaking like no other. It's been squeaking ever since I replaced my alternator so I'm assuming I didn't set the tension tight enough? I have a few questions about this process.

1) Should I disconnect the battery before diving in?
2) How tight should I tighten the tension/what's a good rule of thumb on how I know it's tight enough?
3) Other than setting it to the proper tension, is there anything else I can do to ensure it won't squeak?
4) Any other tips about this process besides cleaning the pulleys with a brass brush?

Thanks for the help in advance guys.

For an NB, but only minor differences for NA. Tension as specced for an NA -- don't overtighten in the hope of warding off squealing, as that can toast alternator bearings.

Since there is no auto tensioner, you need to check the tension and tighten it up as the belt stretches over time. Checking every few months or few thousand miles is the way to go.

Gotcha, so just tighten it a decent amount but not overtighten it? Are there any torque specs for the tension bolt or is it just by feel?

Also, it doesn't mention disconnecting the battery. Should I just do this out of caution or is that unnecessary?

I would :dunno:

I believe there is a connection to the alt that has a cover over it. Disconnecting the battery only takes a min to do anyways.

Squeaking, or squealing? Squeaking is most likely a pulley issue. Squealing is most likely a tension issue.

I just ended up replacing the belt, tightening it, and brushing off the pulleys. It's been squeal free for almost a week so hopefully it won't squeal for a while! Thanks for the help guys.
