ANOTHER EGT Probe Placement ??
 

99 Miata with 2560 turbo FM II kit. Currently I have no motor in the car (it blew up and a new one is being built) making this question one that I can't answer. If the motor was still in the car, I could safely locate a spot for the EGT probe (pre or post turbo is ok with me) that wouldn't hit the Hard Lines for water or oil, block a manifold nut or hit something else on the car. I had "thought" I could drill and tap the manifold log on top at the "Y" of the Flyin Miata casting but after talking with Jeremy, he recommended not doing that for fear of melting the wires indicating that the bottom side would be better. I picture drilling a hole in the center on the bottom side and then the EGT probe hitting or rubbing on something that I hadn't thought of. I do run the Heat Shield provided with the kit which I assume might be a problem with the EGT probe that sticks outside of the manifold if you drill and tap the top. So my question is basic to those that have an FM kit in an NB chassis and still run the heat shield. Where exactly did you drill and tap for your EGT probe?

And yes, I have had problems with melting EGT sender wires. I'm not convinced that underneath the manifold would have been any better though. I have the current one routed next to the head, rather than over the manifold, and it's survived longer than the previous ones did.

Thank you for answering and for taking the time to give pictures, REALLY appreciate that. I may wimp out and just find a spot on the downpipe with the knowledge that it's not spot on. What I SHOULD do is not try to wring 10/10ths out of the motor and forget a gauge altogether. LOL If I had adopted that philosophy, I would probably not have holes through my block.
