That's the BIG advantage of buying the shock/spring/coilover package- they're designed as a package. I've raced a Miata numerous times that's running agxs with 500/350 springs and it's a bouncing-bump-stop-stomping ride at best.

Very true, I wouldn't run my 700s with AGXs. But the Bilsteins handle 'em perfect.

500/350 wouldn't be bad either, my friend Chris in Jax runs 500/325 w/ revalved Bilsteins and regularly posts FTD with a CSP car!

m2cupcar 12-10-2006 02:19 PM

"revalved" being the key word- even the Spec Miata "kit" Bilsteins on not properly matched to the kit springs they're paired with.

I hear ya. I'll probably revalve mine when I get back from Kuwait next October.

By then maybe Shaikh will have the Ohlins valved Bilsteins ready for the market.

It all depends on what shock yous start with. I would have used ebay perches, but not with bilsteins because of the perch mounts on the shock, the ebay stuff probably won't fit.

I ended up with bilsteins, GC 440/350, fcm stops, and fm rear mounts. The GC perch design is dope for weighting.

I'd take the k-sports over the teins because you can probably get them revalved more easily, since they're a monotube. I'm a cheap bastard though, so when I spend $800 on something like that, I go with a product that will be easily servicable, with a quick turn-around time.

Thats why I am digging those AMR's. I will be back in Washington soon so having them serviced if need be would be easy.

How much does it cost and how often do you have to revalved?

Bilsteins last fucking forever. Usually $240 for revalving, to whatever spec you want. I have 120k miles on some bilstein/H&R coilovers (oldschool) and they are still fine.

It all depends on your driving conditions. I expect to get a minimum of 60k out of my bilsteins, hence why i selected those without adjustability, but payed $30 extra for each to get the valving I wanted for the 440/350's.

Bilstein does a lifetime defect warranty. Of course that doesn't cover wear, but if one shock dies, and the other three still live, they will replace it. I've seen this first hand.

I would really get the FatCatMotorsports Bumpstomps for the 1st gen. Was nice to gain the travel back on my old car. Pretty cheap too.

It made the car not freak through corners over bumps, particularly when you don't have full traction in the rear.

miatamania 12-10-2006 06:59 PM

my friend has them and actually does well in STS2...(Justinhomi on miata.net) he said they are like 450/350 or something like that? I can't quite recall the numbers.

what do you guys think about megan racings quality? Im not sure if them make coilovers for the miata (I went with a GC/koni setup) but I was thinking about some megan racing coilovers for a 240sx...

I've had their exhaust on a few cars, it looked good and lasted for as long as I had the cars.

I love the spring rates on the ebay coilovers.

karter74 12-11-2006 10:45 PM

On the ebay coilovers, did the threaded sleeve have a ring in it like the one that can be see in picture 25 of this site:
http://www.villacorte.com/miata/gc_coilover/

If so, it looks as though you can remove that perch and regain some adjustability with the coilover

SamS 12-11-2006 10:49 PM

Hmm, I don't recall, but those look like the same coilovers I have (Edit: j/k, you have GC's). I'll check it out in the spring, I don't need to be any lower in the snow.

bripab007 12-11-2006 10:57 PM

The eBay coilovers I bought did not have that machined or cast ring in them like the Ground Controls, so you had to leave the stock shock perches on.

ive got the bomz racing ones. the set screws were larger than the tapped holes, i just redrilled/tapped the holes and got new set screws.

I have them on some Japanese Bilsteins, not sure if they are the Mazda R package or the HD and Fatcat mounts and 46mm stops. I also rebushed them with some off the shelf energy suspension bushings, reusing the stock metal inserts. (they were a bit scratched so i gave em a coat of black paint)

Nice Website!

karter74 12-12-2006 09:20 PM

So is it totally confirmed that the ebay coilovers do not have the metal ring inside of the sleeve to mount on the shock, they must be set on top of the perch?

bripab007 12-12-2006 11:31 PM

I don't see the exact brand I bought on eBay anymore, but they definitely, without a doubt, didn't have the ring inside the sleeve. Looks like that's the case w/ the Bomz kit as well.

I seriously doubt any of the fleabay ones will have that, as they would then cost more.
