Anyone know how KYB AGX shocks feels like?
 

Well if you read my earlier thread, my lower control arm is messed up and the shock is gone as well. Since I couldn't find a single replacement for the front shocks; I might as well buy set of four new/used ones. I'm running on teins springs right now and this local guy has a set of used Kyb Agx damper with adjustable shocks for 150$. Just wondering if any of you guys have these shocks in your car and how they feel like compared to the oem ones. :)

I'm running Tein S-Tech springs and AGX's. Like it a lot. The spring rates feel close to stock which is what I needed. Streets here suck nuts.

i have a set of the kyb shocks that i installed with my fm springs. i like the springs but i hate the kyb. The compression dampening is less than plush and the rebound is not nearly stiff enough. i do not recommend them. i think that they are worse than the stock billsteins that i removed from my 2000 LS.

i hear that the tokico illumina is a better unit. Other people like the ones from Fat Cat, or Koni.

As for my self, i am looking at FM's AFCO setup to help me deal with PA's shitty roads.

I have them on stock springs and like them. But with me, I probably could have gone cheaper because I only use the car for short distance trips (less then 200 miles) and I don't have alot of twisty roads - Florida is flat.

I have them with FM springs. I can tell you they are much better than stock shocks. It took me a little while to get the settings the way I like the car to feel. I live on, and drive on a lot of washboard roads and they are doing their job well. NM highways also have a lot to be desired when it comes to road cracks, and they have taken out most all of that stuff. Handling in/on twisty mountain roads is fine as well. I have about 10K miles on them. So far, so good.

had them on my celica and hated them. too overdamped.

i didnt particularly like my agx shocks. went with aluminas and it was WAY better

I have agx with the new FM springs 318 lbs front / 233 lbs rear. They are pretty good. If you turn the stiffness up on the shock they get really stiff. I dont know what people are talking about saying they are not stiff enough. Its possible that they paired them with some garbage progressive rate springs and thats why it sucks. I keep mine set at 5 front and 3 rear for the street. It keeps you on the road and leaves the car predicatable if you go over bumps in a turn. For 150.00 you might as well get them. You can always buy something better down the road.

My experience on a set of Eibach Pro-Kit springs (~220F/175R) was that they had an okay amount of rebound damping but too much compression damping.

On a set of much stiffer (450F/350R), fleabay coilovers, they felt nasty. To get enough rebound damping, you had to crank up the AGXs which, in turn, jacked up the compression damping to an uncomfortable level.

for the price i'm happy with them on oem springs.

if you feel they are over damped get stiffer springs.

I just put on a set, with old version FM springs. Haven't driven the car yet (no steering rack), but I'm happy with the stance. Considering how bad the old shocks were, I'm betting it will be an major improvement.

AGX's with FM springs here. I like mine, but I have played with the settings a million times to get them to feel right. Not the best but definitely not the worse! lol....I am however changing to a Tein setup very soon....

They were on the 99 from the PO. All i know is he was taking out cars on "better" shocks and so am I at the autoX course.

I am looking at upgrading as soon as I get my factory bilsteins revalved.

0o lots of interesting info, I think ill just pick them up and see how I like them. And yea, maybe down the road get a summer job, save up some money and get some coilovers. (not ebay ones) ^^

this is what i'm sayin. to justify shocks that dont work well by saying the roads are crappy isn't honest. there's also a reason it takes so long to find the sweet spot. it's the same with the stock Konis.

I have a 26 mile each way commute on 400/330 springs and Tein Flex. I leave them at full soft because they dont need to be stiffer, but they're not floppy or uncontrolled. This is on DC roads. yes, there are bumps that launch the car a little but it's fine. Scott was telling me that in Lars' car with Konis, he almost bounced the laptop off his lap out of the car because of the same bumps. hmm!

Just this last week i replaced me AGX shocks (Ground control kit fitted) for a Tein Flex set up.

There's not really a comparison as Flex's are what 3 x the price of the AGX's, but it really does bring home within the first 1 min driving the car exactly how shite the AGX's are.

Since fitting the AGX's i've never been able to work around the damping rates, the compression damping just does not match the rebound damping no matter what setting i used.
Best work around i found was to use stronger springs (375, 250) and keep the dial setting fairly low (soft).

But even then the rebound damping was just too slow.


End of the day though they're a cheap adjustable shock, ya pays ya money, ya takes ya pick.

For $150 they're probably worth it.
