Anyone make custom or digital gauges in original spot?
I am looking to make a special gauge setup for my car that will fit into the oem spot but don't have many ideas. I am thiking of getting a small lcd speedo and tach to put in there to make room for an oil temp, water temp, and WB.
Anyone diy a gauge cluster? Pics would help a lot. I know one guy here took out a few gauges and put some lcd screens in there place. |
I do believe it has been done, though I am not sure to what extent. I know I have seen the temp gauge replaced with a modified aftermarket one, looked pretty neat with a white face in one gauge and black in all the rest.

Probably doable.
Just replace the speedo with two smaller gauges shrouded with black plastic. |
Autometer makes some gauge clusters that have 4 gauges in one large gauge face. So if that is the route you want to go, you could remove the stock tach, and replace it with a full-face tach, with inset gauges.
Or, just pull the smaller gauges and replace them with aftermarket units with the bezels removed. There are some threads here and at m.n about how to do it. |
Always thought about doing this but never really had the courage to start tearing into the cluster. It would be awesome if someone did a writeup on this.

From Three Kings...
Archie Gates: You're scared, right? Conrad Vig: Maybe. Archie Gates: The way it works is, you do the thing you're scared shitless of, and you get the courage AFTER you do it, not before you do it. Conrad Vig: That's a dumbass way to work. It should be the other way around. Archie Gates: I know. That's the way it works. |
I've seen pictures of guys doing V8 swaps replacing the speedo guage with a digitial version...

The way i am looking at it right now it will cost atleast 400-500 extra to do it this way over mounting them externally. I may try to fab something out of fiberglass that fits in the oem location with 2 1/16 holes in it

Grab a junkyard cluster.. tear away, great way for research and engineering.

I too was thinking about this, but its way on the bottom of my to-do list.
I was thinking of getting a thick piece of abs, cutting it to size and then putting whatever aftermarket gauges I wanted in it. No need to worry about the stock lighting since most gauge have there's builtin. Just need to find a series you like and has all the gauges u want so they all match. |

This will be one of my next projects. I've seen it done a couple different ways now. Regular gauges on blank plastic/CF sheets, digital gauges, full 6" screens, etc. Anything is possible.....
|
I've considered mounting my GPS permanently in there since it can serve as a speedo, and will leave room for boost, oil, real water temp, and afr gauges.

Pretty sure something like this would be badass.

what sort of nissan is that?
|
New someday project: replace stock gauge cluster with one of my own in hopes of making my car almost as awesome as Hustler's.

That is badass. I wonder what all you could fit in the Miata's pod with a flat panel.
|
That's what i was wondering. I have a couple extra gauge clusters laying around that i may use to see what i can do.
What do you guys think of nordskog gauges? |
