Anyone running the Sport Max 501's?

Hey guys,

I am trying to decide whether I should pick up a set of SM 501's

Yes I have been on CR.net and read all the posts for 501's,

I know they are not ideal for this car but the looks and value seems tough to beat.

My 90 has the older style FM springs with AGX and FM rear mounts.
I would probably go with the 195 50 and need some opinions from the guys who are running the 501 on an NA.

Would I need to roll both the front and rear fenders?
I really want to keep the liners installed, will they get in the way?
Would I need to change the alignment?

I guess the most important question is about handling, how does the car handle, are there any rubbing issues while braking or cornering hard or hitting big bumps etc?

If anyone has any good pictures feel free to post them here too!

Thanks

heavy...

hustler 09-03-2007 12:01 PM

why not just run the lighter, and probably stronger stock 15's?

seriously? 15x6 and queer looking vs 15x8 and sexy?

They arent all that heavyfor their size. I wouldnt race on them, but for street they would be hot.

if he's going to run 195's, then why does it matter? Who gives a fuck what it looks like. My stockers look fine.

m2cupcar 09-03-2007 12:32 PM

I think you have to run 195s with that offset to avoid the tire rub. It's all about looks.

I like how the miata limo is just a hair longer than a merc coupe.

Savington 09-03-2007 01:00 PM

Yeah, they are going to rub and hit stuff all day long. The things are a solid 70mm (over 2.5") further out than stock. The ideal offset for a +0 wheel is +36. If you just want to look sick, go for it, but you'll need a fender roll and serious camber to make it work. I'd suggest you look around more at CR.net; the guys here are more performance-oriented.

hustler 09-03-2007 01:04 PM

make sure to run this much camber too:

You only need the shoulder anyway in a corner...fo lyphe.

i HAD 002 and ran falken azenis, and diddnt have to play with the cars camber.
just get a fender roller.i just hope you are thinking about getting your car painted when youre done.

Hey guys,

Thanks, I was thinking 195's to help prevent the tires from rubbing.
Still trying to decide, I love the looks but really dont want to sacrifice any handling or performance.
The 501 weigh's 14.7lbs which isnt too crazy for a 15 by 8.

The good news is that I have a professional roller at work so I should be able to heat the fenders and roll them properly and minimize any paint chipping.

that's actually pretty light... I was told they were closer to 16 or 17 lbs back when there was a group buy on them.

miatamania 09-05-2007 12:17 AM

I run almost 3* of camber for auto-x...lol, it looks almost like that volvo...don't jump on my sack.

BenR 09-05-2007 12:27 AM

you'll probably rub with the FM springs unless you roll the fenders and add some negative camber.

I have a friend with a 002s on a stock 92, with a degree of negative camber and 195s that clears with no problems.

my car. soon to be finished with the turbo install this week.

its been slightly lowered after these pics, and no rubbing. but i will roll the fenders in the future to drop it more a little.

for their size they are NOT heavy at all. it has been weighted at 14.9 pounds each i believe. keep in mind these wheels are quite wide as well.

m2cupcar 09-05-2007 09:01 AM

What looks funky is how the sidewall rolls back from the lip of the wheel- I guess that's what happens with a wide wheel and (relatively) narrow tire. I'm sure you're not getting rub because your car is sitting so high (compared to the usual stance you see with these wheels). My guess is, most who buy these wheels aren't planning for much of a gap above the tire top to the fender lip...if any. Amazing phone shots btw.

danscreations 09-05-2007 11:40 AM

As far as the fitment and tire stretch on the 501's goes it really depends on ride height and camber settings as to if it will look correct on the car. The car will need to be lowered more than optimum lowered ride height. Best looking as when the tire is just about or barely tucking in the fender wells. Once it's sitting that way with enough camber to clear without hitting the fenders (should be 1.5-2 degrees) you won't even notice the tire stretch.

I do agree that stretching a 195 width tire on an 8in wide rim is somewhat retarded since you could fit 225's on them. However, since 195's are the same/close to stock width i think its an OK balance. They look a world better than the stock wheels IF the car is lowered correctly. Other wise they look like a sore thumb. Another thing is that due to the fact the offset is so low from the rear of the car they look dune buggyish. They really need to be 9in wide adding the extra inch inside the wheel to fill up the wasted room and allow you to stretch a little larger tire. And yes 9in wheels fit fine I along with many others have ran them.

Everyone’s got there opinion but for the comment "nopi > going fast"; if you can't equalize the two and find a happy medium the cars not even worth working on/building. I guaranty that even working on performance mods you've said to yourself hey it would look better if you ran the lines this way, or I should paint/clean this part before putting it back on.

Here's a great example! Rob's setup is absolutely sick.

I'm thinking about selling my rotas with azenis for some 002's with 225 tires. I'll pick up betrayed's newer na flares along with them. I'd love to get some 6ul's but I just can't for out the $1k+ for wheels and tires right now.

I'm still debating my course of action though.

The difference between the 002 and 501' s is that the 002 is 0 offset and the 501 is 15mm offset, that is why i am interested in the 501's, it should be easier to "make" them fit :eek5:

That is my problem too I like my 15x7 35mm offset wheels i currently have but these 501s are cheap and i really like the old school look over the newer style wheels on the miata...

I got a dent in my hood from a wrench (pulling on some pulley shit), kinda 2-tone blue paint because the spray paint didn't match precisely, daisy wheels, and still love the car without the s15 front end :td:
