Anyone watching the 91 Sunburst thread?

I know a bunch of people here wouldn't get too wound up about a stock yellow car selling, but anyone watch this thread?

I found it very interesting. The only Sunburst built in 1991 just sold to Tom over at M.net. It has full documentation and 77,000 miles. Other than that, it is completely stock.

He paid 20K for it.

I know that most of the MT'ers wouldn't give a crap about a car like this, but I do think that he got a bargain as far as a collector car. Call me a wine and cheeser, but I mean come on, the ONLY one built? I thought it was an interesting thread to follow. I did call the final selling price early on in the thread.

its a miata, not an Italian chariot.

naarleven 10-13-2008 06:22 PM

Its also a horrible market to sell a car.

And its a Miata ffs..

Scuba_Steve 10-13-2008 06:37 PM

I hadn't seen that one, but I do have a lot of respect for Tom. He knows these cars and which will hold value. I just can't seem to keep any of them stock, so holding value is meaningless.

Interesting. I have a '91 built Sunburst, in fact all 50 of the Sunbursts imported into Australia were built in November 1991. I have owned two.

Anyone want to buy a 1991 Sunburst, right hand drive. Going cheap at USD$15,000 ....make me an offer. :giggle:

I paid 1.5k for mine.... with hardtop.... 20k can lick many different parts of me.
I think car collecting and valuation is lame... its a car... drive it and drive it hard.

JayL 10-13-2008 08:12 PM

If I bought that car I would either part it out, paint it a better color, or just mod the shit out of it. I will never be the kind of person who looks at a miata as a collectors car and I just don't understand those that do.

Actually, quite a few of the 1992 US Sunbursts were built in 1991. That's the way model years work out. The key is that the Miata in question is a 1991 model year car and there was only one. A November car such as yours would definitely be a car that was officially a "model year" in the next calendar year, at least in the US.

Yup, your car is a '92 Jeffa, not that it matters of course..

Given the means, I probably would have done the same thing. I have an irresistible urge to buy things because they're rare that occasionally overrides common sense.

Hence my spending months looking for an R-package car, when I could have had a nicer, more comfortable non-R for the same money.

Saml01 10-14-2008 09:20 AM

And the reason why m.net has to suck off every vendor is now justified.

dpexp 10-14-2008 09:35 AM

I doubt I'll ever see a Miata at Jackson Barret, but now this car will sit and rot in this guys garage. What a waste.

SloS13 10-14-2008 09:44 AM

holy shit. Let me get this straight. Its a 1991 Sunburst. No..wait. THE 1991 Sunburst??
Like its a 1991 Miata and its fucking yellow. Holy shit oh my god.

In other news, I had a bowel movement that looked like jesus. I'll start the bidding at $14.00. Own a piece of history.

messiahx 10-14-2008 02:00 PM

Well, if he can find someone crazier enough to buy the car in a few years...I guess...no. I can't justify it. I mean, I guess you never know...no one expected muscle cars to have a comeback like they've had recently, still seems pretty silly.

Toddcod 10-14-2008 02:28 PM

I could see a big folloing of miatas later on. But I think it will kinda be like the MG's & Vw's. Everyone likes them, but the market is saturated with them. Not to many high pricers out there.

Braineack 10-14-2008 02:40 PM

I could see it possibly being worth something....in 2080.

spike 10-14-2008 02:45 PM

This person deserves the biggest idiot m.net member award for the year.

The person that sold this moron the car is probably laughing her ass off right now.

jayc72 10-14-2008 03:16 PM

If I had $20K to throw away, I would have turned it into a spec Miata. I wonder if it would have still made MOTM?

A Miata will NOT be a serious collectors car in the future.
