Azenis or RS2's ?

I curently have the RS2's and its about time for some new rubber. I have no complaints about them except that I just noticed that they went up in price. They used to only be a few dollar difference between thr RS2's and the Azenis. Now the RS2's are about $15 more. I have never tried the Azenis. What do you guys prefer. Which is better in the rain?

I have the azenis' they're decent in the rain. They get more greasy on the track some say and you can't get them is a 225/45r15. I'm on the 205/50r15s and they're ok. I want the wider tires later on though.
Only reason i bought Azeni RT615s is because the RS2s were sold out.

Saml01 11-27-2007 03:08 PM

The RS2 have a different treadwear rating then the Azenis and people say the RS2 has better wet performance.

If you look at the RS2's tread pattern its identical to another very expensive tire that they currently put on elises but it slips my mind, so they have to be good.

Edit: Yokohama Advan Neova

budget racer 11-27-2007 03:57 PM

I prefer my RS2s.......however, since i work for Hankook I may be a little biased. As far as I know Hankook tires have been underpriced for some time to help the brand grow....so the price increase was inevitable.

Ben 11-27-2007 04:01 PM

So make with the tire hook up or :gtfo:

wish i could ben.......i'm a new guy around here. when i get some seniority i'll let you guys know.

levnubhin 11-27-2007 04:36 PM

Dude just tell them that you could probably get a bunch of sales if they price it right. You dont need seniority to make them some money. As it stands the are $99 each shipped from tires.com. Tell them that and see if they can beat it.

i don't know about the 615 azenis, but the 215 azenis lasted a whopping 5,000 miles for me. i switched to the rs-2 and its looking like they'll get about 10k.

Joe Perez 11-27-2007 04:45 PM

Bridgestone RE-01R.

Al Hounos 11-27-2007 04:52 PM

^heard good things about those, always nice to see another option. seem to be doing well in street tire autox classes.

michelin makes hankook its bitch :slap:

Ben 11-27-2007 04:57 PM

oil goes up, tires go up
$100/bbl isn't going to help things

Savington 11-27-2007 05:03 PM

R-S2s for the track, Azenis for the autocross course, RE-01Rs if you shit gold.

Joe Perez 11-27-2007 05:09 PM

I've got about 3,000 miles on my 01Rs so far, mostly hard in-town driving with two autocross days, a 100 mile canyon run, and about 750 miles of highway. So far they're wearing quite well. I expect I'll probably see 10,000 miles out of them.

I just love these tires. They don't fall off when they get hot, they deal with standing water fairly well, and they grip like a sonofabitch. Good all-purpose rubber.

levnubhin 11-27-2007 05:19 PM

Joe what size do you have? I looked on tirerack and in 15" they only show a 195/50.

195/50 is the only 15" size that Bridgestone is selling in the US. They are a spectacularly wide 195 however. The actual contact patch width on these is about the same as my previous 215/45 T1Ss which, granted, were a rather narrow 215.

levnubhin 11-27-2007 05:36 PM

hmm, at $106 per tire I might consider them.

azenis get greasy in 90* weather after about 4 laps. If its in the 70's, they never go off. I've never driven rs2's.

they also make bfgoodrich stuff, and i don't get charged for it, but thats another thread

hey joe about how wide of a wheel would you say those 195/50's would fit on since they were "considerably" wider?

Well, I've got them on a set of 7" wheels, and this appears to be the "nominal" fitment for them- the sidewall is roughly straight and horizontal and hangs over the lip of the wheel just ever so slightly. GChambers over on the other list mounted his onto 7.5" wheels, and I imagine that if you really wanted to you could stretch them out onto an 8" wheel, but I can't see the advantage in it.

The car is at home today, but I'll snap a picture this evening.

Joe Perez 11-29-2007 09:43 AM

Pictures...

These are the 195/50-15 RE-01R tires on 15x7 +41 wheels. Ride height is about 13.25" in the rear in these shots.

I should clarify one thing. In that last image, it appears that the sidewalls are being stretched out massively to fit the wheel, as illustrated by the red line in this closeup:
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/8...llclosejb0.jpg

There's no stretching going on, that's just how the tires are molded. The corners are filleted at that angle even when the tires are unmounted. Kinda weird to look at, but you can see in the first picture that the sidewall (the darker band with the writing on it) is in fact straight.

My General Exclaim UHP are the same way, its so you dont curb your rims when parking.

mazda/nissan 11-29-2007 12:35 PM

wow those are nice, i like the sidewall look too, may have to get those when my bfg's wear out someday

cjernigan 11-29-2007 02:33 PM

The azenis sidewall wheel protector is huge. Maybe i'll take a shot for you tonight.

mr_mazda329 11-30-2007 03:51 PM

Hankooks aren't sold out guys. Go to onlinetires.com or edgeracing. I haven't seen them go out of stock at either of those sites.

I'm on the RS2's 225's now and the grip is about 90% of the Azenis. RS2's Have better wet traction than the Azenis. RS2's love the heat in them so they are good for open track days. Azenis are better for autoX because if they get to hot, they get greasy. I'd buy either of them again. And both have good rim protectors

supahamster 12-02-2007 10:05 AM

Have you considered a set of BFGoodrich KDWs?

Pretty much exactly how I feel after using both.

rappadan 12-02-2007 10:16 PM

azenis, but i was looking at the re01-r but couldnt come to spending the money on them.

Yea, Geoff, Gus and pretty much every STS2 miata run the re01r's in 7.5" wide wheels. I'm sure they would also fit a 15x8. They are a lot better than the Azenis, we proven these tires to be at least 1 second faster on a 40-50 second SOLO course.
Btw, if you want to do SOLO, the Azenis are quite a lot better than the Hankooks.

UTQG treadwear = 300? They look cool, but I can't see them being competative grip-wise with that sort of rating. The T/A-KD maybe, but they're considerably more expensive than the rest of the bunch and don't appear to offer anything special. Anybody using 'em in STS?

Zabac 12-03-2007 11:25 AM

i have the 615's and i love them
i have been looking at the reo1rs for some time now
i check my times against STS2 and CSP miatas even though in in SM@ (due to the hood) but i am NA so i think its reasonable to compare times...
anyways, the reo1rs seem to be a bit faster than the azenis, guys im typically close with tend to be a little faster now, but not always
but the reo1r does seem to be the better tire

levnubhin 12-03-2007 11:32 AM

Someone just get us a group buy on something, i need tires soon! Anyone know of any sales going on?

levnubhin 12-03-2007 11:37 AM

I know it, I missed that:vash:
