Back from "The Mile"

Somehow I've managed to stay off the board for a month. (As if most of you would notice...) The first two weeks were prepping for The Texas Mile, the past two weeks dealing with nonsense at work and at home.

For those that don't know, twice a year the Goliad County airport is shut down for speed freaks. It is an old Naval Air Station with two 1.5 mile runways in South Texas. The local NASA (National Auto Sport Assoc, not the folks in Houston) chapter hosts the event. Rules are simple; you run the mile from a dead stop, sail through the 132-ft timing lights, then have about a half mile to slow down before taking the turn into the pits or running straight into several acres of Texas scrub. - I took the Miata out to see what Corky and I have managed to build.

Best result, with the top down and running 205/40-16s, I cleared the traps at 142.740 mph and was still accellerating.

If we hadn't lost half of Saturday due to (other people's) mechanical failures on the track, I might have even broken 145. When I go back, it'll be with a hartop and I expect to see the other side of 150.

The top speed for a car was 232 and change from a Supra. After his run I noticed his turbo had sucked the chrome off the 5-in inlet.

Top speed for a bike, 247.

Biggest jerk, the dude in the C4 'Vette who blew out his right front tire at 170+. When the tire went, it shredded his fairing, which in turn mulched his oil resevoir, dumping 7+ quarts of Mobil-One on the track. Props to him for keeping the car straight, but he killed the track for over two hours for running on a *patched* tire...

And yes, there were a few GTRs out there. One moneyed 20-something pounded out a 167 run, with the A/C on.

Holy crap man top down? That's nuts, congrats. You'll definitely pick up some serious speed with the hardtop, I wouldn't think 150 would be a problem at all. :bigtu:

Awesome man. I used to live in Beeville, not much to do that far South though.

SW is the man.

I should have gone out.

Damn, that sounds like a lot of fun. Another reason to move to Texas.

Theres an "Arties mom" joke in there somewhere.

How much power do you have? I went 135mph in the 1/4 mile with my 498hp 5 Speed 4.1 gear 205/50/15 BFG Drag Radial Miata.

I'm going to have to try to make the next event.

What class were you entered in?

SloS13 11-11-2008 03:01 PM

Everything must really be bigger in Texas. Sounds like a lot of fun and DANGER DANGER.

Brain -

A majority of the velocity was achieved in the first 1/3 mile. The rest was fighting aerodynamics.

Marc -

I'm putting a little less than 255 to the rear wheels.

ZX-Tex -

After talking with the Race Director, I wound up in the Street-C Class. If I had followed NASA's Time Trial rules, the mods on my car would have pushed me to TT-A and competing with Z06s, Vipers and such.

This type of event is more about smooth, steady application of power, clean shifts and aerodynamics than powering through a quarter mile. Many of they guys making dragstrip style launches saw top end losses at the mile mark. My biggest obstacle was running with the top down vice having a hardtop. Wider rubber will help, but not as much as cutting cleaner air.

SW's single turbo supra, tuned by clint pohler, built by boostlogic.
he has a boost-logic built miata, a street z06, track z06, and a bunch of other shit.
this run is 230mph, this year he went 241.

I believe that car also has the 6-speed record at 8.47 in the 1/4.

ZX-Tex 11-11-2008 11:44 PM

OK I was wondering what all of the modifications added up to per NASA. Your power/weight ratio is good of course but going up against Z06s and Vipers on a top speed oriented event would have been a mismatch I think. Better aerodynamics and more overall power. But you know all that. Glad you were able to convince the director.

I've got a hard top, and some 3.63 gears on the way so hopefully I can make the next one.

I have seen that video before but daEEEmn that Supra sounds nasty! Sweet nasty.

Hustler -

The Boostlogic Supra is the one that sucked it's own chrome. (Take that any way you choose...)

ZX -

As wild as the Supra sounds, Mike in his Evo bumping against his 10K rev-limiter on every gear for a 218-mph mile sounded more like a bike than a car...

Let me know if you enter the Spring event. I'll PM some addt'l info/insights.
