Back to stock for smog
Hi guys, I'm reverting everything back to stock next week so that I can pass the bi-annual smog here in Cali. I have a few questions, and want to post up a checklist of what I need to do and see if anyone has any tips or anything to add.
List of stuff: Re-install full stock exhaust-straight forward Re-install stock injectors and stock ECU-straight forward Re install stock wideband, i think i cut mine originally, need another one. Re install maf and stock intake. Re install EGR- do i need this hooked up to pass smog? I have a block off plate on there now and it would be really annoying to re-install the egr. I'm guessing ill probably have to install it to pass. Re install charcoal canister- straight forward. Anyone have anything to add, or comments from anyone who has sone this recently? Hopefully its a day to swap off, pass smog the next day, modify downpipe slightly, and re install illegal stuff! Thanks guys |
Either add this to the bottom of your list, or else put this at the top of the list in lieu of doing everything else:
Move away from california. |
or find a smog station that will take a little cash to kinda turn the other way and pass the car?
|
you californians make me laugh.
|
I would rather live in California with the 2 year smog, thank you very much. It is quite annoying, but one day on, one day off won't be that big of a deal. Talked to some people, pay to smog costs about 400 give or take, I'd rather have that as money for parts. I just looked through my stock stuff, I found everything except the stock o2 sensor.
I NEED A STOCK 02 SENSOR FOR A 95!! PM ME! And I guess I will document the whole process to show all you how big of a deal it isn't. |
Try no emissions at all ftw.
|
Why do you need stock o2 sensor? If you have an LC-1 you can use one of its signal wires to simulate a narrow band sensor and feed it to the stock ecu and it will not even know a difference.
|
I have the uego, hooked up through ms pin 10. I'm thinking i need to hook the stock one back into the stock 4-pin connector?
|
pffft, I dont have to do shit. All NV wants is you to answer yes to "having" a EGR and a cat... and to have a good running idle.
My friend in cali for his turbo GC8 has his LC-1 mock narrowband connected into the stock ecu harness and the wideband signal wired into the Hydra |
No silly questions in OH. Just send them your annual $34.50 and get your renewal.
|
So I reinstalled all my stock stuff today, It went pretty smoothly.
I started at 1 pm, took one food break, and a run to ace, and was done at 7. I was working slowly to make sure i didn't miss anything.

Re-install stock injectors and stock ECU-straight forward Went well, except that I tightened down the fuel rail and squished the end of one injector, creating horrible idle when i first started. I found the problem, put in a new spacer i had, and ran perfectly. Re install stock wideband, i think i cut mine originally, need another one. Easy Re install maf and stock intake. Easy, IAC routing was a little picky Re install EGR- do i need this hooked up to pass smog? I have a block off plate on there now and it would be really annoying to re-install the egr. I'm guessing ill probably have to install it to pass. Hooked this back up, very easy Re install charcoal canister- straight forward. Going to try to pas without this installed. Anyone tried this? opinions? Anyone have anything to add, or comments from anyone who has sone this recently? Good luck.
The canister shouldn't have any effect on tailpipe emissions, and since you're not OBD-II, I can't imagine it causing a DTC either. It's just a matter of visual, but if the underhood environment appears otherwise stock, the tech will likely not be looking all that closely. |
I've heard of these "inspections" but haven't had the pleasure.
Heck, I can throw in a V8 and they don't even care. At all. Good luck, OP. |
This Cali OBD II scan stuff is spreading, in 2013 it will be in Ontario.
Do you guys get tested no matter where you live or is it just the more populated area's of the state? We (Ontarians) are only tested if our drivers license address is the densely populated areas of the province, a motor swap also exempts you. |

a motor swap also exempts you. Well, it's not quite that bad, but a motor swap earns you a trip to the "referee station" (a sort of super-smog-inspector) where the vehicle is subjected to much greater scrutiny by technicians who are actually competent.

We get ALL 4 seasons up here!
Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Hell. |
At smog right now, failed the first time, trying again. Anyone else think the charcoal canister would help/hurt not being on?
|
And a motor swap in CA can only be from the same make and model car, just different years. I might be wrong but I think they also did away with that, you can only swap motors with the exact same make, model, and year. I am interested if you pass the visual with no charcoal canister. Mine is gone and I am do for smog in May. Let us know.
|
There are CARB legal v8 swaps in CA.
|
So i passed! I got really lucky with the smog place i chose to go to, they knew that something was "up" with the car, but lt it slide.
I still had the intercooler installed, charcoal canister installed, boost and afr gauges in the car, miataturbo sticker, megasquirt still in the car... It failed the first two times, then i realized the vacuum line that is teed off to the ms was going to nothing, relooped that back in, and it passed (guy also put a fan in front of the car for third try) It was nerve-wracking failing twice, but im happy its done now for the next two years. |
