I'm getting ready to replace the clutch in my '99. What else should I replace while I'm in there.

I'll be doing an ACT Streetlite Flywheel and an ACT XTSS plate with disc.

So far on my list are:

Rear main
Trans input
Throw out bearing


Anything else?

Also, what hardware should I have on hand for the job? New flywheel bolts? New pressure plate bolts? If these are the stretch type I'd prefer not to reuse them.

If you could point me in the right direction as to where to purchase this stuff it would be greatly appreciated as well.

pilot bearing
resurface flywheel (if it's flat, I just scuff it with a scotchbright disk)
be sure to grease up the shaft/bearings

In 13 years of racing Miatas, I have never replaced the flywheel or pp bolts.

on the rear of the head, near where the heater lines run to the back of the head, you'll see a small rubber plug towards the passenger side. Inspect it and make sure it isn't hard and brittle. It'll never be easier than RIGHT NOW to change it while the transmission is out and you're looking up at it.

How many miles... it's easy to replace the slave cylinder with the bellhousing off. They're not expensive... cheap insurance against future failure. If you've got over 100k miles, I'd consider it.

Is Rosenthal Mazda a decent place for parts? They are about 20 minutes from my house.

You'll see the plug supersaiyan is talking about pretty easily. It's on the passenger side of the heater outlet.

Ever change your tranny oil? I did when I did my clutchi drained it out when it was off. Then when I put it back on it was alot easier, because it was lighter, and I didn't have to go and buy more kitty litter to clean up the oil spillage everywhere aha

it holds 2.1 quarts. how heavy could the fluid be? a gallon of water is like 8 lbs and gear oil is a hell of a lot lighter than that.

that being said, might as well change it though for other reasons

Eh, Im a lazy **** ok lol, i like the job to be as easy as possible. And watch your idler sensor and reverse light switches i didnt see my idler sensor one and spent 50$ on a stupid new one...it came clean off the harness so i couldn't even rewire it. Fired up my car ahah it was idling like a muscle car. Ya and if you've never changed it its a good idea to, my other oil was pretty gross, i used MTL Redline good stuff, the full synthetcic one i believe smoother shifting and I changed my diff oil too. Everyone says that the 1.6's diff doesnt hold up, well mine is and im drifting and doing burnouts guess im just that lucky, or its going to go soon.

Rosenthal is the only place to buy OEM stuff. I'm pretty sure you get the same deals in the PartsDept in person as you do online... but if you go in person, you're gonna have to pay sales tax... but I guess if you live in VA, you're gonna pay sales tax online anyways. Their shipping was always very reasonable... but I don't see any reason not to go in person. If they don't have something in stock, it's closeby when they do come in.

Trussville Mazda has similar online prices, free shipping over a certain $$ amount and you won't have to pay sales tax when you purchase since they are in Alabama.

definitely change your gear fluid with the transmission OUT of the car, if you've ever tried putting gear oil back into a transmission that is still attached then you know its a major pita

Alright, I got a SS line. The Royal purple I went with is waaayy to heavy and takes forever to warm up. What's the best, MTL?

I'm going to order a 3.63 rear end down the line. I'm very tempted to shop for a 6 speed while I'll have the trans out.

I run MT-90. A little thicker than MTL.

I don't consider filling the tranny while it's in the car a PITA. Perhaps it is, compared to rotating tires? Compared to some of the jobs on this car, it's easy. Changing the rear heater hose is far more difficult.
