Default Maybe new miata owners just don't quite get it

Well today I encountered my second newest body style miata owner. I was getting out of my car at the grocery store as he was walking out to his car. Now I know that he saw me as I was pulling up next to his car( i saw that hesistant "i just bought a new car and someone is parking next to me" look on his face) As I got out of my car he was putting his groceries in his trunk. I told him that he had a nice car and he proudly stated "Yea, Its a 2006 Mazda Miata". I told him that they have made a few changes with the miata and that they are a really sharp car. He then proceeded to ask me "What kind of car do you have there". Hoping that he meant year I stated "92' " He then asked me "what companies makes that". NOw, need I say more? As I said this is the second latest body styel miata owner I have encountered, the first one atleast knew my car was a miata, didn't even have a clue what size engine his car had, or what I meant by six speed manual. Did this latest generation of miata owners get lost on their way to check out the new chevy cobalt that their AARP magazine told them they liked and accidentally stumble across a new Miata or what? Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Miata-folk tend to fall into two camps for the most part: the car enthusiast (to different levels of course) and those that find it a cute/nice car. Not my story, but one guy in a local club swears that he met an older guy at a gas station with an older miata with a HT and the guy said, "Wow, I didn't know they made a convertible version. I have the coupe."

Actually there are lots of stories of people buying the hardtop option from the dealer and then driving their cars for years not knowing the hardtop could be removed.

Well to day i was driving around looking for a tube for my turbo. I was getting in my car when this guy pulled up and was like "Hey.... How ummm .. whats your car worth? Like $700?" I was just like "Its not "normal"" He looked as if i told him it was a time machine. Dose my car look like a 700 dollar car?(see members rides, 92 turbo miata) I sat there for 15 min telling him what a turbo was and what was done to my car and he said " Oh so its worth like 6K", Me "sure", Him " Well i could have got one today at an auction for $700 and it looked just liek this one, man. I could have made 5000 thousand bucks." Me " NO, You just dont ******* get it"

First heard that hardtop joke about 15 years ago and seems to keep surfacing now and then. Still never believed it happened, but makes a funny story to tell.

Anytime I take my Miata out expect 3 or 4 comments either at red lights or just parking somewhere so easily several thousand times. The most frequent question asked it .. What kind of car is that? Many Miata owners ask me the same question. Was even asked that by a Mazda mechanic until he got a closer look!

The funniest comment I heard several times was ... What a beautiful restoration I did on a 50 year old car.
