bizzaro land coolant temps

the past week, my car has been trying to overheat when i am at a stop light. temps are chilly-chill all other times and it's been in the 30's F tempwise so it makes me laugh a little.

note that this is with the heater on.

normal driving temp is around 190F

stoplight for 2 minutes brings it to 220-225F (which I dont consider dangerous)

as soon as I roll away, it falls back down to 190.

it could be a dead fan or air bubbles or something, but since I haven't checked anything yet, i'm just posting because it's weirdly timed with cold weather.

pinhole leak?

cap leak?

thermostat stuck?

fans working?

patsmx5 01-12-2009 03:30 PM

Check to see if the fans are working first.

FWIW, my motor runs pretty hot all the time. Like 210-220 ish. I'm'a do a reroute one day and see if that changes.

Damn you for making me look up what that was. I'd managed to forget about Rick's nasal escapades... :barf:

Sounds like my car with broken fanz.

y8s 01-12-2009 04:52 PM

the true test will be friday when it's going to be 8° :(

naarleven 01-12-2009 04:54 PM

My car has been stuck at like 200-210 highway. At stop lights 190-200. Without ducting or cover, a koyo 37mm, & stock fans. I'm going to have this race prep shop make me ducting so I can get the temps down a little lower.

This is relieving. I thought my car was running mad hot.

hustler 01-12-2009 05:23 PM

I'll tea-bag your netty-pot.

For over a year now I've been trying to figure out why my car over heated.. I never could find anything in the tune, the fans ran, I upgraded the rad, replaced the cap, the thermo, etc..

Same boat here, except I haven't replaced the rad yet.

both fans were on when I got home tonight. I didn't notice it get above 210 though. :dunno:

<burp>

y8s 01-12-2009 09:29 PM

but how did the air get in there if I haven't touched the system in months? did I <burp> my head gasket??

peak coolant temps in the datalog were 111C / 232F. hmm.

normal temps in the same log (driving) were 87-88C / 188-190F. doublehmm.
