Blown 1.6L Diff, 1.8L Auto useable?
 

Hey guys,

I am new to the Miata and new to the Miata forum world but I have joined a few forums and I feel like this is the best place to ask my question.

I currently have a 91 miata with a blown 1.6L differential. What I have available for parts cars in my town is a 1.8L 93 miata with an Automatic transmission. Are these differentials interchangeable? I know in order to do the 1.6 to 1.8L diff swap you need the axles and the drive shafts, which obviously apply to this swap as well. But is there any changes if it's the parts off of an automatic transmission?

If it's a 93, it's a 1.6, not a 1.8. 1.8s are 94 and later (assuming you're in the US).

If it's a 93 1.6, then the diff should swap right over.

If it's a 94+ 1.8, then the diffs bolts in, but you need the driveshaft and halfshafts along with it (and probably the rear uprights, since they tend to be rusted together). My understanding is that the auto and manual driveshafts are the same, but I've never actually looked at an auto one.

Automatic means it's an open diff.
