Boost a 185k motor?

Assuming a compression test shakes out, think boost on a motor with 185k will be ok? Please leave educated answers, I've asked a few people before and they just say "oh yeah it'll blow up":vash:. Anyone with a boosted high mileage motor care to chime in!:)

Do a compression test and a leakdown test. If they turn out fine, the engine is fine. Boost away.

I did it.

What's the rule of thumb again? Is it that they need to be within 3-5% of each other at a certain level?

i'll let you know in a couple weeks when i boost my now 241k mile 94 motor.

if it blows i have a 99 on standby

I boosted mine at 164k. I haven't been boosted for too many miles, but the only issue I've had so far was a blown heater hose (hadn't protected it from the heat of the turbo enough)...knock on wood

w8lifter21 12-06-2007 03:47 PM

Definetly post up here how it goes. PS, just checked out your FS website. "Paulmart" had me crackin up LOL.

providing the tests are good: Do It!!!
just make sure you get a good tune and make sure you take good care of it afterwards, ie. do not skimp on the oil changes etc.

We're running a 1994 1.8 with 206,000 miles on a non-intercooled Jackson Racing w/8psi, Powercard, o2clamp, runs like 10:1 under boost. Blows through a quart of oil every 100 miles and puts down 160rwhp.

Installed it at like 175,000 miles. Engine compression is about 128psi across the board. :D

Gives me some hope! Isn't that alot of oil to be going through?

ngarcia1983 12-06-2007 04:06 PM

hi

my miata was boosted at 175k miles i started with 5 psi,now the engine has 265k miles and im boosting 12-14 psi. i hear knock now and there but have not blown the engine. the miata engine is reliable and a strong little motor.

go for it and boost it.

ngarcia1983 12-06-2007 04:08 PM

i forgot to mention taht the 12-14 psi boost started around 190k miles so you figure.

Oh yes. I'm sure the EPA isn't real thrilled with us.

When the car reaches 0psi the car starts smoking black from the excessive unburnt fuel pouring into the cylinders, and blue from the rings and valve seals.

The car still runs great, otherwise... you just don't wanna be behind it.

lol. When I had a blown seal on my t04e in the vw, I just let that fucker smoke. It was like driving a smoke machine.

I totally missed this post... NICE dude. On any given day what numbers do you put down?

Mach929 12-06-2007 05:20 PM

if this is your only car then do not boost it. if you have another car you rely on then go ahead, motors are cheap if it does shit the bed.

sprx3 12-06-2007 05:42 PM

I just put an avo kit on my 240,000km engine (150 odd mile), have done around 500km in it so far & has not had any signs of not liking boost, at the end of the day if its what you want do it, motors are cheap enough & its a weekend job to get a new one in if its your daily...... boost will always = some time off the road from time to time but its impossible to say how bored i would be with my car now if i had to remove the kit....

w8lifter21 12-06-2007 08:22 PM

I do drive it daily, but I have other cars I can drive.

Suggestions as to what kit to go with?(I know it's been asked probably 1,000,000+ times) I don't have a ton of money to spend, but I was looking at a used Greddy kit or something like that in the $800 ball park. I'm surprised that so many mods should be done to the kit in order to make the kit more reliable.(Cutting the manifold, replacing hardware, etc.)
Other options in the $800 ballpark or should I just keep my eyes open for a used Greddy kit? I don't see them as often as I thought I would.
