boost kills trannys fast huh.........?

well i just finish tunning it at 12psi on the dyno..... feels great so i leave the dyno and i say what the hell let see how it feels. punch it in first light them up throw second tires light up again for a lil then third for a lil then let off. do it a couple times and i start to drive normal and hit it again and second gear grinds like a champ and the gear box is starting to feel a lil notchy. so i guess my tranny let go......... ill look for another one and rebuild this one while it out. has anybody else toast trannys that fast i mean i just finish the boost set up and my first time pushin the tranny hard on boost....

cjernigan 10-25-2007 11:29 PM

Not really.
Do you use your clutch?

mazda/nissan 10-25-2007 11:29 PM

if your paranoid and have deep pockets get fm's tranny upgrade :dunno:

i did however get a spare transmission just for that instance :bigtu:

you can shift without your clutch its posible.

what miata? 10-25-2007 11:51 PM

i know you can at a certain rpm sincro matches fine. but why risk it and not catch it and go about scratching your gear. i see no reason unless you have dog box. but anyways to answer the question i am shifting with the clutch......

Gloko 10-25-2007 11:59 PM

well it was probably going to let go soon anyways...the boost just exagerated a existing weak link......

what miata? 10-26-2007 12:02 AM

thats what im guessing also i was just wondering if anyone had a happen to them so fast.

Al Hounos 10-26-2007 12:13 AM

stop beating the shit out of it, that would help.

mikef85 10-26-2007 12:16 AM

Mechanical Empathy is definately needed on the 5 speed. The 5 speed isn't strong enough to hammer the shifts at that power level. The 6 speed is better, but the gearing sucks.

cjernigan 10-26-2007 12:18 AM

Nah man, just giving you a hard time about it. I purposely don't make hard shifts from 1st to 2nd because i don't like spending money on things I don't have to. I much prefer the top speed in 2nd to the top speed in 1st anyway so it just makes sense to not destroy 1st so that I can get to 2nd faster anyway.
Maybe you can try starting it 2nd from now on. Corky recommends it, though i personally don't like it, even with my 4.30 rear.

what miata? 10-26-2007 01:39 AM

yea i do a lil drifting around the local events here so we tend to take off in first hard and slam second.... i guess ill try to get a low mileage tranny and see how it holds up......

I had spur gears in my VW back in the day. Its so, so loud. Of course the strength is nice, but I was miserable driving it.

I have a ton of gear lash noise in my 150k mile tans...I should probably line up something newer...right?

How difficult is it to build these transmissions? I'd like to crack one open and send it out for cryo...I bet that will help significantly.

Braineack 10-26-2007 08:51 AM

i rag the shit out of mine.

how much torque do you have....if it's under 200 then you simply cant drive ;)

Loki047 10-26-2007 09:12 AM

it happens, hows your motor mounts btw?

hustler 10-26-2007 09:14 AM

how much torque can I put down, and expect to make it home from the track? I'm running r-comps now too.

Loki047 10-26-2007 09:17 AM

you can put town infinite torque, its a matter of the impact loading of the torque. IE dont drop the clutch artard

Stealth97 10-26-2007 09:21 AM

I blew a stock tranny beating the hell out of it with stock power. I never broke anything when I had a blower or a 75 shot of nitrous. How you drive it matters more than the power level, JMHO

Zabac 10-26-2007 10:13 AM

buddy of mine blew two transmissions, but he is in the high 200's tq wise (not sure) and 290whp, not sure how

what miata? 10-26-2007 10:13 AM

engine mounts are new and i know how to drive.......... car had no problems before boost.... it does have some drifting events under its belt... as far as me improperly shifting thats not the case. maybe it was on its way the previous owner was a woman and she went threw like 2 clutches so maybe she help the process. the car is at about 220-230 whp and 210 tq

Zabac 10-26-2007 10:14 AM

boost dont kill trannys, drifting kills trannys
sounds like a bad porno

Loki047 10-26-2007 10:19 AM

nothing kills trannys but torque.

Doppelgänger 10-26-2007 11:25 AM

Hmmmmm..... strange things the transmissions are.

I have been drifting for the past 5yrs. In my 96, i never had a problem with the tranny from drifting. But i did obliterate 2nd when racing a 300z tt. But i replaced that tranny and never had a problem again.

Then, in my 99, i was simply driving down a back road and dropped from 5th to 4th and i heard a slip (like a clutch slip). So i pulled over and disvocered that 2nd was gone..... and that ended up taking the rest of the trans with it within a week. Replaced and have since done a LOT of drifting/hard driving with no problems.Though i do hear a good bit of whine through my short shifter... but im betting that hast to do more with the solid sifter bushings then the trans itself.

On a side note, i am hearing a minor clanking from my car. It only does it when the car is in neutral and making a full-lock turn..... like turning into a marking spot. I hope its not the diff (96 4:10 torsen).... but the diff has like 250,000mi on it lol

Loki047 10-26-2007 11:32 AM

you gotta remember when your tires are slipping drifting theres no power transmitted back through the drivetrain. Its the launch that kills you

I dunno, we'll see how many more hard clutch kicks with my 6 puck the stock tranny can take. :bigtu:

Zabac 10-26-2007 12:46 PM

im no drifeter so i dont know, but dont they have to powershift to maintain the slide....dont they also drop the clutch to get it to break loose? i thought so, sounds rough to me eh

Loki047 10-26-2007 01:00 PM

they suck if they have to drop the clutch to get a boosted car to break loose in a turn

hustler 10-26-2007 01:29 PM

I'd rather hand-ball a leather daddy than go drifting.

Saml01 10-26-2007 01:37 PM

Anyone power shift their car or have the cojones to try?

Loki047 10-26-2007 02:12 PM

Hustler,
