Brake slider grease
Is copper thread antisieze appropriate for brake caliper slider pin lube? It's the stuff I smear on spark plug threads. It does not appear to be a good high speed type lubricant, but I've seen it recommended. I also have tub o axle grease, but I believe that it may overheat and run onto the rotors? Or do I have to drag my ass to the parts store tomorrow AM to pick up some special brake grease?

special grease. napa sells sil-glyde. one tube lasts for years. otherwise ask the parts store worker to hand you a couple packets of brake grease. some places give it aways. it's about the size of a wet-nap packet, usually up near the counter.

i use some red hi temp grease in a tub. we have some copper stuff at work in an aerosol that lists caliper sliders, backs of pads, spark plug threads, and some others as uses, but i thought it was strange myself so i haven't tried it.

Cool, thanks. I'll just pick something up in the morning then. There's both an Advance and an Autozone about 5 miles from me. They're across the street from each other, so one is bound to have it.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who had doubts on the copper stuff. |
use Ford Racing brake slider grease. Kelly swears by it.
I've used both pin slider grease and a bottle of anti-seize...whichever I grab first. |
I bought some synthetic brake caliper grease a while back. Manager swears by the stuff. He says it holds up to the higher temps better and just works. So I bought it and it works great for me.

I use it every day at work and love it, works great for the street, but if you are expecting high brake temps I would go with something else. |
over here we use molybdenum grease on the slider pins

tub of grease, 20k and no problems

Got (2) wet naps sized packets of "brake lube" from advanced. Which was the only thing they had, and that was the only store I stopped at.
Just painted the final caliper bracket (the one that was missing from my kit). Once it's dry I'll go do the job. In my driveway on jack stands like a commoner. On one hand, I hate working on jacks after being spoiled with a lift. OTOH, it will piss my neighbors off. :bigtu: |
Last time i was at advanced i picked up a large tube of brake caliper grease. Cheapo looking thing but it has some real thick grease that i use on slider pins and other things of that nature.
|
i have access to lifts and all that but most of the time i prefer to work at home because i have access to all my tools, can take my time, check the computer....and if something goes wrong it's still at home no big deal.

Silglyde. I use it on multiple things on the car.

So the suck of it is, after all this drama, in the bottom drawer of my toolbox (next to the tub o grease) was a tub of Bendix Brake Lube.

Neighbor just came by to complain about my "devauling the neighborhood" by working on my car in front of my house. Apparantly, I also have a tree limb that fell in the side yard that's also a big problem.
|
Wow, do you live in a strict neighborhood or something?
|
Yes, there's a covenant, and too many busy-bodies.
When I had an accepted contract on the house, but before I closed on it, I sent a carpenter friend of mine over to start planning the rennovations out. He came over in his work truck; an obvious carpenter's truck with a bed full of tools and ladders on the roof. The neighborhood association's president saw him over, entered the house w/o knocking, and demanded that he mow the lawn. :td: |
I don't think that I could ever live in one of those neighborhoods with all the rules.. They do usually look nice but some people just go over board.
|
House was too good of a deal to pass up, distressed seller, 40k under market. Was saving up to up big down payment on a more expensive home, but was financed at 0 down for this one. Spent the down payment money on renovations and ended up with a pretty nice house. Just need to get all the remodeling done; almost there now.

Meh, ignore 'em. What're they gonna do, really? My parents live in a real nice neighborhood with similar rules, and I worked on my cars countless times in our driveway. We got maybe 5 letters over the years complaining about it but we just ripped them up and threw em out.
I also got bitched at at my old apartment for installing my Greddy in the parking lot. |
