buick crew: thoughts on exhaust bits for MSM

Lets say I had a basically stock MSM, and after driving an awesome, turbo, green miata its time to buy cool shit for it.

The car currently has the RB muffler and the rest of the power-train is stock with one metal intake pipe. Where is the money best spent? I recommended a BEGi downpipe and 3" Enthuza exhaust. Will this make the car any faster, and not throw codes? Is the "separated" DP worth the extra cash? The goal is more power and earlier spool.

thanks,
god

I'm confused, do you have a MSM or a turbo green miata? and where does buick come in?

18psi 01-27-2009 10:51 PM

Your sister should get a good downpipe and exhaust. I will catch shit for this, but I'll say it anyways: IMHO seperated gasses dp is not worth the extra change

From what i understand, the stock downpipe doesn't flow very well on those. With the new downipe and 3" exhaust, she will be doing great. I don't see why it would throw any codes.

When you say one metal pipe, do you mean the stock rubber elbow going into the throttle body has been replaced? That has a problem with ballooning pretty bad under boost.

yeah, the stock tube blows off on the track. Should she expect a gain in power and earlier spool?

msm = heavy and slow = buick

Intake, a real intercooler, DP and 3". Gets you just under 200whp on a stock computer.

she wants to do exhaust first, then suspension...then I envision a bigger intercooler and MS.

Best money spent is a good intake and MBC to turn the boost up to around 10-11 psi. According to the dyno I went from 154 rwhp to 184 rwhp. I personally prefer the Begi SGDP over the FM DP. Both will pick up a decent amount of power. The SGDP will cause boost creep on some cars. None of the stuff mentioned will cause a cell. Probably the cheapest and IMO best bolt on exhaust is the magnaflow.

msydnor 01-27-2009 11:31 PM

You can get the magna flow exahaust for around $350 from performance peddler.com

why not 3" enthuza? That magnaflow at performance pedler is 2.25". She has RB exhaust now and there's so much turbulence that you can only hear air-noise when you drives by on the track. We're avoiding upping the boost for now because she doesn't want to deal with overheating on the track. This car saw its first track day with something like 800 miles on it, and its seen the track about once per month for the past 3-years.

She drove my car and couldn't fight it anymore.

Hustler,my suggestion is to,first post pics of your sister, then we can determine what mods best suites her by her looks.

....better yet,get her to join this forum and have her ask her own questions.

johnwag 01-28-2009 12:02 AM

hustler's sister is courtney love.

The MSM magnaflow is a 2.5".

Real men have 3".

FM intake, Absurdflow 3" SGDP turboback, STOCK computer and STOCK intercooler gave me 213 rwhp / 205 ft. lb.

That's not bad at all. What are you at now? Who makes absurdflow?

My numbers were based off of a friends MSM with a 2.5" exhaust.

18psi 01-28-2009 01:17 AM

Doesnt TurboTim make them?

akaryrye 01-28-2009 04:01 AM

yes its turbo-tim ... aka shore motorsports

I made the assumption that she was like most chicks and wasn't looking for max power which usually creates more noise. 3 inch exhaust in typical fashion should yeild a bit more power. As far as uping the boost, at 10 PSI you shouldn't have any issues. But since she tracks it, I'd be looking to replace the factory IC pretty soon. A lot of MSM owners went the ebay cooler route and in the past few years I have not heard anyone have an issues with one. I think I paid something like $115 shipped for mine and it's been doing fine for a few years. IMO, at stock boost, or any level on the stock turbo, a 3incher is not a great diffrence. If you plan to continue to upgrade it may be worth the effort

msydnor 01-28-2009 08:41 AM

My first upgrade was an AEM CAI with a manual boost controller. I did a baseline dyno before the install. I was at 154 rwhp. After the AEM CAI and MBC I went back and out down 184 rwhp, boost was set at about 10.5 which is max without the boost cut kicking in. Next I did the Magna Flow exhaust and the FM DP, and ebay IC, which put me at 199rwhp. Last year I switched out the FM pipe for a begi SGDP and changed my AEM CAI for an FM intake. I haven't been back to the dyno but the car felt noticably stronger. Oh yeah, the stock diverter valves are known to suck so put that on your to do list. The rubber, stock TB inlet pipe is known to swell and pop off after a few upgrades, so add that to you to do list also.
