Buying a used NA questions w/ pics

1) Car won't accelerate more than 10mph even when in gear at 6000rpm. Can a clutch be so worn that it won't barely move? Clutch pedal seemed pretty soft too. Tried pumping the pedal to no avail. No smoking or bad smell. Slave? Or clutch?
2) Car failed CA smog in all 6 sections. NOX CO HC @ both 15 and 25mph. She said mechanic said it was a bad O2 sensor. Possible all b/c of a bad O2 sensor? 3) CA car all it's life in Redondo Beach, CA. But there's alot of rust under the car. Can someone look at the pics and tell me how bad it is? Thanks Attachment 210996 Attachment 210997 Attachment 210998 Attachment 210999 |
Try the clutch slave first, they're pretty infamous. The rust doesn't look too bad to me.

+1 to what turbobluemiata said. a clutch slave wouldn't keep it from accelerating. just from going into gear.
Now you say it won't accelerate and then you start talking about the clutch. Are the rpms rising at this point? If not then it's not the clutch. With the problem of the o2 sensor and emissions you mentioned it's probably a bad cat. The motherfucker is probably stuffed more than Artie's mom on your average weekend. |
Yah, RPMs keep rising and barely to no acceleration.
|
RPMs rising and no movement would most likely be a clutch, as you've already thought of, so you're probably looking at a new clutch and cat to get it running good and inspected..
How much are they asking for it? |
I was going to offer 700. However, the rust scares me.

The rust did not bother me until I saw the pic of the front wheel area. that looks pretty bad, not an easy spot to repair either, but if its just going to be a beat around car, and you can fix the other issues, dont see why it would not be a good car to drive the wheels off of for $700. but for a project car I'd pass.

$700 thats a deal just drive it like its stolen:)
|
Poke at it with a screwdriver. If it goes through, walk away. If not, strip the paint off and re-do it. For $700 I would probably buy it though, I've bought dumber things for that.

not bad
Its rerally not a bad deal for the price.
