camber question?

Is it possible to camber the stock shock so that the top of the tire is leaned in more sort of for drifting, i heard it was possible but im not 100% sure
any help/suggestion's
i have sportmax 002 15x8 205/50/15 in the rear i just want to tuck the top in a little

Oscar 02-28-2008 09:16 AM

you can only get so much camber on stock suspension

I suggest you stretch 185's over those 15*8 wheels for extreme drift performance

Braineack 02-28-2008 09:44 AM

You can get plenty of negative camber.

No. The Miata has a double A arm suspension not macpherson strut single A arm. Negative camber is going to come from rolling out the cam bolts as far as possible, and lowering the car. After that you can go to some offset bushings. A lot depends on the length of control arms since there's a tolerance. I had offset lower bushings on my 99 and could get over 4* neg camber - though never ran that much.

Zabac 02-28-2008 09:49 AM

yeah, about -4* and 165-70/R15 will stretch beautifully over a 15X8 wheel

mx03tb 03-03-2008 06:03 AM

very nice is it pretty easy to do it your self or will i have to bring it to my local mazda shop..also i have stock shocks with eibach ground control coilover sleves

RusMan 03-03-2008 01:19 PM

Take it to any alignment shop and ask them to get as much negative camber as possible if you want that, you can usually get to -2.5 -3 if you're not too low, but I think that's too much camber for drifting, you want to stay somewhere around -1.8 -2*.

haha funny any ways i went there today and they told me if i could get the whole alignment set up it would be easier for them..so if you could help me with a good set up with the camber caster and toe that would be great.

Braineack 03-04-2008 09:34 AM

FRONT:
----------
-1.5 camber
Maxed Caster (give up caster to achieve camber, make certain it's equal on both sides)
1/16" toe out

REAR:
-----------
-2.0 camber
1/16" toe in

that's fairly agressive, tire wear is normal, turn in is great.

if you don't need it, then maybe -1.3F and -1.7R

+1! This is a fantastic setup if you can achieve the numbers. Brainey, I assume that was supposed to be 1/16", not 1/6"?

Braineack 03-04-2008 11:10 AM

yes. fixed.

fwiw, i just dropped my car off to go, -1.7F -2.3R with 200lbs ballasted in the driver seat.

RusMan 03-04-2008 11:13 AM

If you're gonna do a lot of drifting, I suggest to get some more negative camber on the front, somewhere around -2.

mx03tb 03-04-2008 03:55 PM

yeah oh that looks really good
thanks peeps :)

UrbanSoot 03-04-2008 04:01 PM

here are alignment specs for drifting:

Front:
Camber: -2 deg
Caster: max
Toe: 1/16" out

Rear:
Camber: 0 deg
Caster: n/a
Toe: 0

UrbanSoot 03-04-2008 04:03 PM

the idea is to have max grip up front and no grip in rear

Obviously, Captain Obvious :)

Doppelgänger 03-04-2008 04:23 PM

I don't get why you'd want more camber in the rear then the front.....

I've always run -1.9f and -1.2 R and loved it.....with 0 toe all the way around (helps with wear)

Braineack 03-04-2008 04:31 PM

a typical spec miata alignment would be -2.0F and -2.5R......

Zabac 03-04-2008 05:32 PM

yeah but he is a driftomaniac with madtyteJDMness, needs more camber in the front

You may actually be adding some grip by running less camber in the rear for Drifto.

If you actually look at accelorometer data aquisition you can see the side loads falling off rapidly after initiation to a steady ~.33 G's on most cars (of course depending on the track, banking, surface).

It's still always best to start with a good baseline and adjust per your pyro measurements and tirewear.

Chris Swearingen 03-04-2008 06:13 PM

I run
Front
Camber -2.9/-2.9
Caster 6.3/6.2 ( love those offset bushings)
Toe -0.17 degrees ( that should be a little more than 1/8 total toe out)
Rear
Camber -2.2/-2.2
Toe 0.06 (slightly less than a 16th toe in)
Thrust angle -0.04

does the wife not get to run on the stickies?

Joe Perez 03-04-2008 06:33 PM

(edit) I was going to say "Boy, that's a pretty old picture" but then I noticed the cut fenders. Where's the Home Depot lip?

Chris Swearingen 03-04-2008 07:13 PM

That's my 15 1/2 year old daughter on her first ever autocross run. So anything that might break off was removed. I am "saving" the 275s for my swing through SoCal in a couple of weeks. She did great right up until the finish where the words "full throttle" may have slipped past my lips, causing her to spin through the finish. I thought it looked kind of like a drift picture, but you guys are on to me.
