can 94-97 powersteering system fit on a 99?

i just bought a 99 miata with no powersteering and the whole powersteering systems from a 94-97 miata.
So will the powersteering system from 94-97 fit on the 99 miata?

Are you sure your '99 doesn't have a manual steering rack? Some of them came that way. Pretty sure it would be a R package. Could be wrong though.

EDIT: R should be Sport

zoom2zoom 03-30-2007 01:59 PM

umm, there isn't an R packsage NB.

cjernigan 03-30-2007 02:01 PM

OOps, by R package i mean sport. Isn't that what Pitlab has? All i know is he has manual steering and it was pretty rare to get a '99 with a manual rack.

His other post indicates he was looking at a 99 sport.

Power steering in a miata sucks.

my 90 came with p/s, my 92 didn't. love the 92, wouldn't have it any other way.

cjernigan 03-30-2007 03:22 PM

Only benefits of the P/S rack is that the P/S rack is supposedly 1 turn shorter lock to lock.

Werd, I plan on depowering my rack FM stylee when I throw in the FE powa. Can you buy just to boots for the rack? Mine are seriously fucked from what looks like years of a slow ps fluid leak. I have to put in a new bottle every couple months (doesn't bother me too much).

cjernigan 03-30-2007 03:56 PM

The boots on mine have been replaced. Pretty sure they're just a generic boot safetywire-tied on there. You could get them from mazda or just find something at the local parts store that fits i'm sure.

Yes I have a 99 sport package (it was called the R-pkg in the older cars).

The 99 sport pck is the best miata from the factory in suspension, weight (almost as light as an NA). Very few came with a manual rack so if you have a 99 with manual rack and a sport pck. you are very lucky. Why would you upset the car by adding a power rack. Sell the car and find a 99 LS or another package that has a power rack if you want that and let someone that will track the 99 have it.

The P.O. of my car was so glad it went to someone that would keep racing it.

I would say keep the manual steering because I love how it drives on my project miata. When you are driving the limits it helps out a bit in the steering feel as well as being able to predict exactly how much force you will need to make your turn.

cjernigan 03-30-2007 08:01 PM

I'd like the feedback from the steering that you all with manual racks have. I might end up doing the FM depower one of these days as well. Might have to test one out that has been done that way first though.

yeah the guy sold me the car said it was a sportpackage. with complete everything manual. window, door, steering. lock. everything. it's had 53Kmil on it and i bought it for $5,500. with stock front lip. back sport spoiler lsd, short shifter, blestein (dont know how to spell it) suspension front strut bar and one bar behind the seat dont know wat it call.

i will try to post up some pics soon.

pretty much the outside look like CJERGAN without the stock sideskirt

akaryrye 03-31-2007 04:29 AM

sounds like you got a pretty good deal on that car. See if you can get used to manual steering if you can, because its really not that bad after you get over the fact that low speed steering takes a bit more effort.
