Can anyone tell me what this "aux fuel pump" is for?

1990 Miata, Turbo, COP, ~90k miles

I'm having issues with the fuel injectors losing pulse at 3k RPM. Found this little guy with burnt connectors and weren't making contact at all anymore. This does not appear to be OEM and looks like the PO did something strange here, but I could be wrong. The orange wire seems to be spliced into the white/red wire that goes to the fuel injector relay.

Does anyone have any clue what this "pump" is for?

probably for some terrible fueling solution he hacked together.

I shivered at that picture. Almost afraid to imagine what the rest of the car looks like

are you sure it's a fuel pump and not a water pump for when the car finally surfaces from under water?

I'd like to see a pic of where the line that is blue is coming from. Please tell me it comes from a fitting screwed into the fuel tank drain plug hole.

I'm curious if he bought it from an estate sale of a burn victim

He drove it into the rive trying to put the fire out

I was going to say, that is nowhere near the OEM fuel hookups.
