Can I remove the bumper completly?

1 Attachment(s)
I am currently running project: "Make the Miata legal in Sweden and make her a bit lighter while I am at it" in my garage. I removed the bumper cover to install new EU headlights (for inspection) and I am now tempted to remove the huge chunk of steel in the front known as Da Bumper.

SO Q is: Can I remove the complete component that is the bumper without the bumper cover hanging like a sad lip? I have seen and read about people cutting the bumper into pieces so that they can remove only the center of it but keep two parts on the sides. Therefore the question. See pic.

on my 01, that piece you are pointing at is plastic and held on by a few bolts. it's not structural at all.

I removed the plastic and replaced it with some steel welded to the frame. Rather than saving 2lbs I probably added 5....ohh well, now I'm fucked. :bang:

I believe the plastic is just a impact piece, removing it has nothing to do with how the bumper mounts or will sit afterwards.

Plastic! Yes, that is right... eeh.. Just what I said!! :slap:

Don't know what to blame this one on... I am niether drunk nor high. But it has been cold as crazy here today!

It is the impact protection and it looks mighty solid (held on by 8 bults), but I guess it doesn't weight a lot since it is... plastic!

Its the bumper reinforcement.

Find weight savings somewhere else, not in safety equipment. My .02 cents.

+1

I'ld rather keep the extra few pounds. Just go to a gym for a few weeks.

LOL!

Yea, there is no coming back for seconds if you die. Safety equipment first.

We once didn't sell a dirtbike to a kid cause he said he wasn't going to buy brakes for it. LOL He said" I don't need brakes...I'll down shift" LOL

Yea, my dad pulled us aside and said " Is he retarded?" "You better not sell it to him." ....LOL

Yeah but not the best idea unless you already have a tan interior.

OK ok, the impact reinforcement stays (you damn nancys...). Laxative sounds a bit unpleasent. I'll just drive naked instead.

For ideas on saving weight take a look at the Red Beast - Lightweight Miata website.

Might have some better ideas for you without risking your hide. Hard to believe a Swede isn't concerned about safety!:bang:

My Grandma's name was Ingeborg so you can guess at some of my American mutt heritage.
