Can a trans fit in the passenger side of a miata?
well can it punk? Must I remove the seat?
easy
No way, jose.
Your car will go in circles |
just remove the seat and lay some plastic down....
i dont see why it wouldnt
Tranny's fit perfect in the trunk. All four kinds, 5 speed, 6 speed, automatic and crossdressers all belong in the trunk. Why would you want to haul one in the interior?
Seriously though. Why inside? The tail shaft fits into the left opening in the trunk and the bell housing rests with plenty of clearance for the trunk lid. |
If a couch can fit in a miata, why wouldnt the trans be able to?

Four screws in a pair of rails, five on some......seriously....:2cents:
I ripped the seat out when I picked up my spare 5-speed. Would've easily fit with seat still installed though
It will fit; but you risk damage to the interior.

Picking up a spare trans Saturday and figuring out the logistics, might need to pick it up in the miata itself. |
Just install it and have two transmissions
I want to install it, but the plan is getting rid of the POS current one. I'd tired of a tranny the sounds like it has straight cut gears, shifts awful, and whistling with light revs.
I've got a trans in the back of my daily right now. I'd pretty much forgotten about it. Last week, I had a dressed out longblock in it, in addition to the trans, a pallet, a footboard and two bedrails. Not sure what the problem is here.....
I'd pull the seats, but Johnfag and I did this last weekend to transport a trans for a friend.
Cause I worry and over think things? I'm trying to prevent having to drive 45 minutes in the opposite direction to pick up my altima just to grab the trans. I planned on leaving the car on jackstands in my parent's garage AFTER I picked it up. then it's a new clutch and swap and then fabricating a new exhaust.
I'm sure it will fit.
What about all the oil and gunk you're going to have all over your interior though? Unless its completely wrapped in something |
it's wrapped.
I took my new 6speed for a 2.5 hour drive in the passenger seat and then came back with the 5speed in the passenger seat. It was a bucket seat so there was more clearance, but I didn't have any problems fitting it. They wanted to roll around which was fixed by wedging some extra towels under it. My car smelled like ass for 2 weeks after that from the redline synthetic diff oil.
yes, but put it in the trunk. oil smells and ruins interiors.
i dont honestly see how it can fit in the trunk of a miata...
I picked my 6 speed up last week. With a bunch of crap in the trunk even. You slide the tail shaft into the opening on the left above where the factory jack goes. The bell housing will rest in the deepest part of the trunk. Easy peasy JDM squeazy.
Don't make me haul it back out to the car just to take pictures for you! |
but i'll have to remove my sub!!!!!!! and it's possible with my amp it wont be deep enough.
and where will i put my jack and tools if i break down on the way? |
you're being a little bitch right now hustler
..I mean brain:giggle: Just hold it in your lap. Problem solved |
OP. I haz solution. STFU until later, when I have time I'll get back to you.
If its that big a worry about the bell housing not fitting into the foot well, do the following:
Bring a piece of plywood that covers the bottom cushion of the passenger seat. Something maybe 18X18 or so will be close enough Place it on there, with lawn/garden trash bags covering the seat. Bag up the trans as best you can. Put tail housing into passenger foot well. Rest bell housing on pass seat plywood. Use tie down to seat rails to hold in place. The trans weight will be distributed onto the surface of the seat pretty well, and it weighs less than a passenger in the first place. |

 |
If you are going to bag it (a good idea) get the extra thick 'contractor's grade' trash bags so they will not tear. You can get them at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
ITT a whole huge pile of dorks will obsess over transporting a very light and small object. And I will lulz and proclaim it to be good.
scott cant put anything in his passenger area right now. the whole interior of his car is disassembled and sitting in the right hand footwell.
but his speakers are the bomb. |

But his speakers are the bomb. qft. |
You only needed the sub to hide the noise from the crappy tranny. You won't need it when you install the new tranny. Yank it!
Seriously I'm driving around right now with the shift boot off and the transmission hole wide open to the ground, it's hilarious the noises the drive-train makes.

The amount of hot air that can come up through the transmission hole is pretty useful during winter. |
